hi all,

I have been doing a lot of "soul searching" and i feel case management would be a great fit for me. How do i go about landing a case management job?? They don't seem to exist when I look online. Any tips on how to find a case management job (looking in NJ if possible but not opposed to relocating).

I can tell you my recent experience..I applied for a CM position that did not require CCM to begin with but an agreement that when eligible the candidate selected would sit for certification (the requirements vary - you can see those specifics at the CCM credentialing site) which for me will be a year.

I interviewed, was hired and started 2 weeks ago. It's a lot different than clinical nursing which is good and bad - going from 3 days week to 5 has been an adjustment & there are some clinical things I miss - like starting IV's - BUT it's also nice to not have to get up early, work weekends/holidays or get home past 5-5:30. I wear business casual in the office & will wear khaki's & a lab coat w/my company's logo (that they provided for me) when in the field. I am not one to spend money on clothes especially business type ones that I would never wear off the clock so I hit some thrift stores & was able to get what I needed to start with for less than $25.00. The benefits w/the company I work for are average but the salary is very good plus a few other "perks". While it's not a remote - work -from home position my office is 14 miles from where I live & the clients are all w/in one county. My education that helped land this position is I have a BSN and an MS in the field for the client population we are serving. I have been an RN for 28 yrs and have varied experience.

Even w/o CM experience you have a shot - most hospitals - at least where I live - require CCM before applying but there are some other companies & I'm sure hospitals - that won't.

Start with hospitals in your area then move to insurance companies - you can also visit the National Assoc. for Case Managers for guidance as well. Good luck.

Apply at United Healthcare. They are always hiring field case managers.

I'd say check with the various insurance companies' websites. Then, apply in spite of them stating they require experience or CCM. Hey...you never know. That is what I am doing. I am also applying to my local hospitals for CM jobs. Yes, I have received "rejection emails," but I have also received invitations to interview. I, too, am very interested in case management. After my own "soul searching," I believe that CM is a great fit for where I am in my career and what I want out of it. I wish you all the best in your job search!!
