How to break into case management nursing and utilization review....

Specialties Case Management

Published

I have roughly 4 years of clinical nursing experience, with some indirect case management, insurance verification and discharge experience. I applied and interviewed for a job which said ,"ENTRY LEVEL CASE MANAGEMENT" but upon arriving they said they would prefer that I had some case management experience.

1)I'm so confused about this, but that's a different story entirely.

2) How do I break into case management?

3) How do I break into utilization review?

4) Is there some place on the internet, perhaps even on this forum, that gives a good run down of UR and CM, such as steps involved and what not?

I appreciate any and all help you can give me!

Hello everyone, just wanted to say thanks for all your responses. I am an IMCU nurse for well over 7 years with a BSN and have been having a difficult time trying to even get an interview for a case management position. I also get the kiss-off responses that the went with another candidate. I thought There was something wrong with me. Didn't imagine it would be this hard. Your coments have given me hope to not give up. I am in the West Palm Beach FL area- appreciate any advice.

I work as a case manager at an insurance company and do home visits. I was also a case manager for 2 years before I got this job...and with that job they hired me with ZERO CM experience. The job I have now does prefer to hire people with CM experience or at least home health. I have an associate's degree by the way. I guess some people think I have a great job but my caseload is enormous and it is sooooo much work. I prefer not to say which company I work for.

Also, for the first CM job I got i was hired as part time at first just to cover for someone that was on leave, but it did leave to permanent after a few months.

the best way to break into case management is to become a RN for a home health agency. this will allow you to be a case manager of a determined amount of patients, after working there for a year you can obtain your ccm certification. my home health job paid for my certification, i am now interviewing with humana for a work at home job as a ccase manager. good luck with your search but i got started from home health.
