Hospital Case Manager vs. RN Nurse Liaison

Specialties Case Management

Career advice please. I have interviews for two different jobs. One is for a Nurse Liaison for a reputable Acute Rehab Hospital, the other is for a hospital case manager position. I have been a case manager before, but I have never worked as a nurse liaison and cannot find much information about it. Has anyone here ever done that kind of work? I realize it is more of a marketing/sales position, but I would love to hear more from those who have worked in that role.

I have actually done both positions. I was a liaison for 4 years and started in case management 7 months ago. The liaison position is very focused on the marketing and building referral sources. They set lofty goals for you and you have multiple meetings daily and weekly to discuss your goals and if you're meeting them and if not, what are the barriers. There is very little use of your clinical skills. Not to mention, you're traveling daily and never know day to day where all you will be going. I find that I enjoy case management much more. I like that I no longer have to travel every day and that I'm utilizing my clinical skills. It really depends on if you prefer marketing or a more clinical position. Best of luck to you.

Agree. I have also done both roles. The liaison position was a sales/marketing type role. You will work to build relationships with the referral sources, so that you bring in business. I had to continually meet my metrics ( certain # of contacts with my referral sources and # of referrals brought in). I liked relationship building but it was also a lot of meetings about business results and who are you going to see today?

In the hospital case manager role, I met all the new admissions to my floors, figured out their needs and discharge plans. Also set up services such as home health, O2, dialysis if they hopefully had coverage.

Thank you for the responses. The liaison position I am seeking would not require much travel as I would be stationed at one hospital. I'm not worried about the sales aspect that much either. I am curious if liaisons get bonuses based on marketing efforts. Can this area of Nursing be more lucrative than case management?

Yes, I was eligible for bonus as a liaison.

I was eligible for a bonus as a liaison as well, but with the stringent criteria, our team only bonuses once in 4 years. I also earn more as a hospital case manager than I did as a liaison and I'm eligible for a bonus every 6 months.

I know this a relatively old thread but I was a liaison for the last 3 years. Technically we were eligible for quarterly bonuses of $2000. We were lucky if we got paid bonuses once/year and most of the time we didn't get the full $2000. Our bonuses had nothing to do with individual performance but the performance of the entire region. Literally we had 2 hospitals that carried the region- mine and one other liaison's but we got paid the exact same bonus as liaisons who were underperforming. I left this position for a Case Management position and I make more money now.
