Carreer Advice --- scary?

Today I got a job offer from a nursing home to be a night supervisor. I am a new grad nurse. They plan on training me for 3 months on the floor duties and then to take over as night charge. The shift is from 2:30-11pm with my bosses being there until 5pm or so. I will be the charge for the whole facility (140 beds). With 6-7 RN's and LPN's under my supervision. The other 2 RN's who did this are still staff but do not want this position(I did not meet them). The Director is new to the facility and states they would be their to help me but I'm worried. The facility offers some really good student loan repayment and would take care of my loans in 3 years. If I make a 3 year commitment to them. The pay is not bad but I'm afraid of making a big mistake by taking on that kind of responsibility being so new. I have about 3 years of previous management in another field so I'm not to afraid of that but in bad situations with coworkers I didn't have to do much to cover me. So any ideas? The money is tempting and I like nursing home stuff but.... charge in 3 months?

I'd consider this position. Seriously.

I've been working in nursing homes throughout the past few years, and a 3-month orientation for a new RN supervisor is practically unheard of. In my area, the typical orientation time for a new supervisor is 3 days to 1 week, and management will laugh in your face if you dare to request more time. Remember that nursing homes usually do not have the budgets for long orientations the same way hospitals do. Well, 3 months is a hell of a long orientation for a nursing home!

Good luck to you!

You were offered the position for a reason. Don't doubt yourself & have confidence. Between your background, 3 mth orientation & the support of the director- you should do fine. The only thing you may want to take into account is the 3 year commitment. Is that something you would consider? Also, why don't the other staff members want the position- do they know something you do not? So you have alot to consider- I wish you all the best.
