Cardiac RN gone rogue

Im jumping ship!

I've been a cardiac RN in a CVU for 2 years now and I feel it has completely run it course. I sat down and did some deep thinking and remembered that my inspiration for nursing was a OB nurse that took care of me when I delievered preterm 6 years ago. I remembered her story. And I remembered how much I wanted to do OB when I first graduated (but no OB unit wanted new grads at the time). So....I'm ready to be courageous and go for it!!

So has anyone else had this experience of moving from telemetry to OB? How was the transition? Pros, cons? What can I do to prepare? Please feel free to share tips with me.

You'll feel like a new grad all over again. Give yourself time to adjust. It will take a while before you feel comfortable, but you'll get there. Ask as many questions as possible during your training. Start by familiarizing yourself with what's normal (observe healthy newborns).

By any chance, do you work at Nhmc? Just curious...

I just got hired today as an L&D nurse after working in Cardiac Care for 3.5 years. I know I am going to feel like a new grad again, but I am so excited. This has been my dream since before getting into nursing school! Good luck to you!

I did cardiac ICU prior to mother/baby and I LOVE it!!!!! Such a complete difference. I feel like a new grad.

I worked with an RN in L&D who used to be an ICU manager at a large facility. She called switching to L&D her "midlife crisis." :) She is a great nurse and I liked working with her. Great background in cardiac/ICU, very type A, pays close attention to detail. I say go for it! I agree with everyone's comments here tho that you will probably feel like a new grad for awhile. That's ok! Just be open to learning. :)

Thanks so much everyone! I am very type A as well and I am hoping that my need for organization and control do not get in the way. I am somewhat excited about feeling like a new grad again. Something new and lots to learn!
