    Over the past decade, there has been increasing concern about the use of beta-blockers as first-line treatment for hypertension. A number of studies have indicated that beta-blockers as a class are not as effective as other antihypertensive drug classes in the prevention of cardiovascular events, and several meta-analyses have concluded that beta-blockers should not be used as first-line treatment in primary hypertension.
