why cant I get hired?

Try calling the employer and find out what the reason was. Sometimes they will tell you why you were not hired. I thought military people are considered first.

Hello everyone I am a military trained LVN that challenged the board to receive my license about 3months ago and passed my first try (hold the applause...lol). Although I have much experience with the military it was 4 years "before" I got my license. Its quite frustrating that i have a license and cant do anything with it. How can I get a year "experience" if no one will hire me? Can anyone help me on tips on getting hired @ a hospital? Or anywhere for that matter?

In any event, many hospitals do not hire LPNs/LVNs or make very limited use of them. Your best bet for employment is LTC or hospice, but if you absolutely want to work in a hospital, small town hospitals may be more likely than urban medical centers to utilize LPN/LVNs, although they generally pay much less than large city hospitals. You may also try other unique venues, such as plasma centers.

yes i am licensed in california...but i haven't tried hospice...will i have a chance even without hospice expirence

Have you tried the VA, working as a civilian in a military hospital or some other Federal agency/facility? Your military experience will give you an edge.

I agree with Andreas about trying smaller hospitals or LTC. In NE where I came from, most new graduate LPN's had to start in LTC.

A Hospice Inpatient might hire you without experience because you would have other nurses around, but I'm not sure about home visits.

Depends. Some hospices do hire new grads. LTC experience is generally factored into hospice hiring decisions, since LTC nurses deal with end-of-life and palliative issues; indeed, hospices will often make "home visits" to residents in LTC.

I am an LPN hired as a new grad in an Indian Health Services hospital. Ther are also a lot of Commissioned corp nurses here. They do consider native then military first when hiring and I do work in a Hospital.

To the OP, is it possible employers don't want to hire someone who challenged the LVN boards and passed, that they might prefer someone who went to LVN school? I'm genuinely wondering. I never heard of challenging LVN -- or RN boards -- outside of CA. I think army medics are probably the only ones I'd think would have the actual education and training to challenge the boards, BTW ... but I do wonder about those LVNs who challenge the RN boards and how adequately prepared they are. Have you considered going to nursing school for your RN? This might solve your problem. Do you have a degree in another field? I hope someone hires you to take advantage of all your great medic experience!

once upon a time Medics could challenge the RN board for the simple fact of we where trained like RNs (with the exception of pushing narcotics) Its frustrating that I have the experience and training but cant do anything with it. I am currently doing a bridge program for my RN but i still have to work to make a living...

I would suggest like op said and apply at a VA hospital. Im sure you will have priority there, even if this is not where you "want" to work it will give you a foot in the door and the yr of wxperience most palces want. I to have had trouble finding a job in So, CA as an LVN. I love my current job(1st one that hired me) but I am not utilizing all the hands on that I went to school for. I really wanted to work in an ER and had several interviews the one thing that held me back IMO was that I was not bilingual. Don't get discouraged something will come along.
