Can't Get a job? Considering Military? Enlisted/Officer

Published

Ok so I'm so frustrated right now from all the turn downs Iv'e been receiving, I am right now considering enlisting in military as my last resort. (I can't be an officer Though Im an RN, I graduated from the Philippines and my school is not CCNE/NLNAC accredited plus I am not a citizen yet. Did anyone go down this route? or is planning? i would like to hear you out thanks!

My roommate (RN BSN) and another woman in my class could not get into the air force because it was too competitive.

I see, is this for officer or enlistment?

You can enlist but you won't be an RN

Stupid question, I have no military knowledge, but if you are an RN, and you enlist, why wouldn't you be an RN in the military too?

Thanks!

No not always, you have to apply and looked at by a board to commission as an OFFICER. You can enlist in the Army and be an RN but sign up as an infantryman.

Enlisting and becoming an officer are not the same thing. The Army or military in general is essentially full on new RNs as well.

He/She cannot be an RN (which is an officer in the military) because A. They are not a citizen B. Their school is not accredited and C. The military is very very very competitive right now.

thanks admin for moving the thread. I agree with Dranger, enlistment and being a commissioned officer is not the same, Yes I'm still an RN when i get to the military but not as an RN, but as an AMEDD (if in the army), being that i didnt graduate from an accredited school, i cant go for commissioned officer. Now my question is, is there a way? like maybe taking a masteral or refresher course from an accredited school of nursing, so i can go for Officer in the military?

Hi Code. Im in the same situation u are in right now career wise. Im just wondering what move u made?

AMEDD just stands for the Army Medical Department. As far as I know you have to have an accredited BSN to get in and even a MSN doesn't cover that. I am not sure if that has changed.

Either way even if you did get one, the Army or military in general has no need for new nurses off the street at this time. You can contact an AMEDD recruiter but they will tell you the same thing.

My advice: Forget the military gig and keep looking for a civilian job maybe even in another state. The military is really tightening up recruiting numbers nowadays. If you want to enlist you can try being a 68W or Medic but the pay will be A LOT lower than a civilian RN. The over arching problem is you are not a citizen and your school isn't accredited. Until you can change those two things, which is doubtful anytime soon, nothing can happen.

This thread reeks of a dangerous naivete.

OP, entering the military because you can't find a job civilian side is one of the worst ideas I've heard in a long time. Do you realize what you risk by entering? Are you willing to deploy, forfeit your right to make decisions about your family/yourself, work uncompensated hours due to budget cuts? Are you aware that the competition to keep one's job is fierce inside the military as well? Do you realize what's involved with getting "hired" into the military and how unlikely it is that you'll be accepted due to the lack of a need for new grads?

@puersumdei, if I thought the OP's original question was naive, yours has left me at a loss for words.

Folks, we are at war. After 12 years, we're still in the Middle East. At present, our government appears to be very interested in getting us involved in even more conflict. Do you like the sound of Afghanistan? Syria? That's what you should be asking yourself. You'll find that questions about pay and ease of entry sound pretty silly (and stupid) in comparison.

It sure doesn't. When you enter the military, you specify in your contract (as an officer) what your job will be. If you enlist, they assign you an MOS (job), train you, and send you on your merry way. I've known enlistees who have degrees in foreign countries. I've worked with nurses and doctors who are enlisted because they didn't think they could get in any other way. Worst mistake of their lives, I assure you.

If you can't get in on the straight and narrow with your job as it stands, trying to sneak in the backdoor by enlisting is not the answer.
