Canadian New Graduate Moving to the States for Work (NOT Traveling Nursing)

Published

Hi all!

I am nearing towards the end of completing my BScN and need some insights regarding work as a New Graduate Nurse.

For background information, I am a Canadian Citizen from the Metro Vancouver area and doing my BScN at a Canadian post secondary institution. I am projected to graduate in less than a year.

My partner is also Canadian and has been working in New York on a TN Visa (in a different profession). Ideally I would join him in New York to work as well. I have not done an extensive search regarding the process/requirements however I am asking if anyone here can help me understand/give me some insight if they were in a similar situation. Either completed their BScN in Canada and immediately worked in the states as a New Graduate Nurse or took time to meet the criteria and eventually worked in New York. I am not interested in travel nursing contracts, because Ideally I am looking for a permanent contract that aligns with the work Visa.
I am curious.. How did you get there? What is something I should know? Is experiences as a Canadian RN needed before working in the states as an RN? Is there a resource I can contact where I can ask questions to regarding this topic?

Any help is appreciated! Thank you all for helping me in this journey!

1. You can actually message the HR at the NY hospitals you are interested with to ask questions if they hire Canadians for TN1 status, say as a New Grad Nurse. Usually they have immigration specialist. Some hospitals have a new grad program that require new grad to join.

2. Graduate from BScN w conferred date on transcript & pass NCLEX & register w BCCNM to be RN.

3. You can apply for CGFNS Visa Screen Certificate (Credential Assessment) needed for TN1. You can also apply for license in NY at the same time.
