Canadian needing SSN

Published

Hey everyone,

I am an RN living in Winnipeg, MB Canada. I have plans to move to South Dakota on a TN visa. The problem is, I have recently found out I need a social security number in order to transfer my Minnesota licence to South Dakota. I seem to be in a pickle because I cant get a SSN until I can legally work in the USA. I've read about this issue a lot on this website. Has anyone found a way around or through it?

There really isn't a way round it. You can apply for TN with a letter of employment and VSC and once in the US with TN you can apply for a US SSN and then endorse license from one state to another

Thanks for your input Silverdragon102. I guess another question is (and this maybe a silly question): Can I get a letter of employment without having a license in SD and only a license in Minnesota....with the intent of moving my license to SD once I get my TN visa? Has anyone ever done that? I realize it not likely that anyone would hire me if I don't have an active license in that State, but is it possible? And would the boarder see that as acceptable? I think I know the answer, I just want other peoples experience with their and opinion. Thanks

I've seen people post success with your method. Need to find an employer willing to wait for endorsement
