CANADA to USA Licensure

Published

hello,

I Live in Ontario, Canada and I would like to write my NCLEX to get my license for the state of Michigan. Has anyone ever done this or can help me out? I have some questions, and heard it was kind of a complicated process:

1) If I register for the Minnesota NCLEX, I will get RN licesure for every state.

2) the Minnesota board allows me to register into it without having passed the CRNE.

Are these 2 things true?

Moved to the Nurse Registration forum

Registering with one state will not automatically give you a license with other states. Many states still require you to meet their requirements when trained outside the US.

Looking at their requirements you need to send verification of Canadian license

CANADIAN EDUCATED APPLICANTS:

1. Canadian applicants who have graduated from an approved Canadian educational program taught in

English need to have the following documentation submitted to the Michigan Board to be

eligible for the NCLEX examination:

a. Transcripts of your nursing education sent to our office directly from the school.

b. Current verification of your Canadian license sent directly to this office from the

Canadian licensing agency.

You will have to pass the CRNE.

Why do you have to get a license in Minnesota when you can get one in Michigan directly granted you are licensed in Ontario? There are many Canadian nurses working in Michigan living in the Windsor and Sarnia metro areas. Many of them have worked in Michigan hospitals for over 20 years.

thanks very much for the link

The only problem is that people have told me that it takes about 4 months to actually get the full Canadian license. I would like to get my Michigan license ASAP because I live in Windsor, and it's closer to home rather than moving to a city like Toronto, etc. for jobs. Also, I've heard that I can write the Minnesota exam without having my Canadian license first and apparently that also gives you the license for MI as well.

I have a lot of research to do, lol

No you would need to apply for a Michigan license by endorsement, incurring whatever associated costs. Even if both states were participating in nurse license compact you would have to be a permanent resident of a compact state. It's always most economical to apply directly for licensing in the state you wish to practice

The NCLEX is a national exam just like the CRNE is a national exam.

OK just looked at the Minnesota BON website it states you need a Canadian license. This indicates same requirements as Michigan so probably better to apply to the state you plan on working in. Plus with current job situation in the US you may find it hard getting a employer willing to go the NAFTA route with you and as that will take time maybe better to take CRNE and try and find work where you live

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS EDUCATED IN CANADA

Submit verification of licensure from the original Canadian province in which you were first licensed and

the U.S. jurisdiction in which you were most recently licensed as an RN.

Submit an official transcript if you are not or have never been licensed in Canada, from your Canadian

nursing education program or a confirmation of program completion.

And I do agree with Silverdragon. While there are many Canadian nurses employed in the border cities of Michigan, these nurses have been employed there for years. They have become invaluable nursing staff for the hospitals there. However, many Michigan hospitals have had hiring freezes right now (just browse the Michigan Forum). These hospitals will continue to employ the Canadian nurses who are already part of their nursing staff for years but the same hospitals have not been opening many new positions for new nurses including those who graduate from nursing schools in the state. You will eventually find a job there with patience if that's your goal but I doubt this will happen any sooner than you think.

thanks for this. But does that mean I don't have to have my Canadian license since this says: Submit an official transcript if you are not or have never been licensed in Canada, from your Canadian

nursing education program or a confirmation of program completion.
