Can NP work right after passing exam

have you looked into getting the Graduate license (GRNP)? Contact your Department of Health in your state to ask if this is a feasible option

It depends on where you live. I know in Michigan you need the official paperwork. If you do anything before then the collaborating MD must actually duplicate your exam and be present for any interviews and must cosign--which is no bargain if you're being hired to save time!

Hey all! I am scheduled to take the FNP exam in August! AACK!
IF I pass, when can i start work? I have a position available but MD and I are not sure if I can start right away or if I have to wait for the official paperwork.
Also... are the exam questions comparable to Fitzerald? I am scared to death of the exam! Any input will be greatly appreciated!

I am not a recnet tester so read this posting with that in mind.

All really depends on your state. Independent testing center to AANP to state boards even though testing was done by computer still it took a few weeks.... One would think in the age of computers the Internet and all it would be quicker... :bugeyes:

Jillbug-good luck on your NP exam next month! :) How long did it take, in weeks, to hear that you could schedule your exam after you mailed in your application? I mailed mine in (for ACNP) exactly 6 weeks ago today and still nothing. I know they received all my materials because I called them 4 times, but I still am not authorized to schedule my exam and am getting so frustrated. Anyhow, good luck.

Christvs...It took 2 months from when I mailed the application to get my notification of when I could sit for the test. I am not sure when they received my transcripts from the college. (I received the initial letter that they recieved everything about 4 - 6 wks after I mailed the app.) Now I am wishing it didn't come so soon!!!! Now the countdown begins....

in texas, we can begin work as a graduate np as soon as we have finished our program, before the board has even received our official transcript, before our authorization to test, and before actually testing. granted, before they have received your official transcript showing completion, you are very limited... can function only as an rn... but be training for your np role... aka "interim approval" good for 90 days. the board says that you just cannot present yourself as a certified np until after testing.

after they receive the official transcript and paperwork from the school saying you have completed the program, and they have received a copy of your payment to the certifying body requesting to test, they issue what is called provisional authorization, which allows you to write uncontrolled prescriptions and work as an np with supervision per md.

then immediately upon testing and receipt of results, they issue full authorization to practice.

unless things have changed: here in georgia you can't. as an rn you can't. years ago they did away with the graduate nurse designation. so you have to pass the boards and have proof of licensure...

IN mo, i have to get the stuff saying I passed, then I have to fill out the application, and send in my money and apply for licensure. but it sure is a relief to have my test out of the way (I took it this past monday!) yeahh!!

I forgot about sending MORE money for licensure if I pass the exam!!! lol!

when i tested (aanp) at the end a message popped up: ...you appear to have passed... does the test still do that?

was the test all multiple choice or has the format changed?

actually, "provisional" approval lets you practice as a np-graduate for up to one year. the "interim" approval is only good for a 90 day period.
