Can LPNs Work in Pediatrics?

Published

Hi,

I plan to go back to school after i have my baby (my forth and last :) ) and need to plan a route that will fit my busy schdule. Ultimately i want to work in L & D or pediatrics as an RN but if i can start off as a LPN and work in pediatrics then that would be great for me. I really do not want to work with the eldery, more so with women and children.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Specializes in Psych, Surgical, NICU.

I have 4 kids of my own and I worked as an LPN in Pediatric Home Care, it worked very well with my schedule and I learned alot! I had a few friends who worked in the peds field as LPN's in the hospital. I dont see why you couldn't do that??

Good Luck!

Where I live (in Western PA), our local hospital has a PED/Med Surg unit since there is not a high population of just PED's patients there. However, I know of many LPN's that work on that floor. As long as they are willing to be cross trained for Med/Surg as well, they still get to work with the PED's patients too.

Also, my children's pediatrician only hires LPN's in his office.

I'm starting to love NC after reading how others are having a hard time getting jobs. There are LPN's that work at my children's WONDERFUL pediatric office. (They go to the same pediatrician that I went to as a kid!) There are many different areas that lpn's can work.

There are no LPN's in peds at my hospital. I heard they are trying to get away from using LPNs in most hospitals throughout all states. I worked peds home care like the above poster for 5-6 years before getting my RN. I loved the peds homecare. You can learn so much about trachs, vents, g-tubes...good experience and fairly good pay.

I work in a Pediatric Emergency Room.
