I know that we can't give it IV, but IM? I've never heard that we couldn't give anything IM.... One LPN,one of those people who MUST allways be right and if you dare to attempt to doubt them, they're willing to end up in a fist fight just to get a "Okay, you're right" from you even if there's no proof at hand. Do you know of a site on-line where I could look up what LPNs and can and can't do? (I'm in WA)

in my state, yes, lpn's may administer these drugs im. i am rather sure it is allowed in all states, but, you will need verification on that.

and, yes, i know exactly the type of person to which you refer!! :stone

Texas we can give them IM or IV. I'm almost positive all states allow LVN's to give all IM drugs.

I advise you to check with your individual institution. Here in NY, LPN's do so much, but each facility has different restrictions. Where I work, they are just getting LPN's IV certified, but other agencies around me have LPN IV teams. But IM's? Sure.

In the hospital that I work at in OK you have different classes of nurses ie LPN/RN I II III and as a LPN III I can do everything a RN can do but be a charge nurse, I have hung and run blood, IV meds and pushes, and so on

As far as I know, an an LPN can give Ativan and Haldol IM in most states.

As far as Valium IM, I as an RN, have never given it IM and would question doing so on the basis that the drug is extremely irritating to give IV, even diluted. As such, it would probably be pretty painful to give IM. And, our MDs (hemo/onco) order very little given IM anymore.

Ativan is also can be irritating to the tissue when given IM as well, as it is very thick and hard to inject.

These drugs can be considered chemical restraints in some uses and that may restrict their uses in some facilities.

And some level doses of valium/ativan might be perceived as conscious sedation when given IV with other drugs such as fentanyl, morphine, dilaudid, or demerol, and even RNs may be restricted in given those combinations on the floor per specific facility policies.

If I can give Dilaudid IM (and I have), then why not Haldol, Ativan, etc?
