Dear Nurse Beth,

I’ve been working on a surgical/oncology/telemetry unit for a little over a year and a half. I recently applied for a job in the cath lab and I will be shadowing soon. Is it crazy to think I can go from no cardiac background to the cath lab?

Dear Going to Cath Lab,

It's no more crazy than saying a nurse working GI lab needs an extensive background in GI conditions or a nurse working Surgery needs to have a background in cardiovascular diseases before scrubbing in on an open heart.

Cath lab is more about diagnostic and interventional procedures than disease treatment. You should be up on your cardiac rhythms, and they will teach you the rest.

With a year and a half of surgical/oncology/tele practice, you should be fine.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
