Can I still be a nurse with a misdemeanor conviction

Published

Hello all i am new to the board. I am currently enrolled in nursing school and when i was 18 years old got into some trouble with a previous job. I was charged with a misdemeanor breach of trust (2) counts under 1000.00 i requested an expungment but they won't give it to me because i have 2 counts and they consider it a first and second conviction. what i want to know is will i be able to continue persuing my career in nursing with this misdemeanor on my record? Anyone with some information please help.

There is no easy answer on this. Do you have the money to see a lawyer? Have you researched your state's board of nursing regarding past convictions? Legal Aid may be a good resource for you also. Don't give up, probably something that can be worked out, but you must face it & get it figured out to make sure you would be eligible for a nursing license in the end. Keep us posted how it goes.

Call your state board of nursing and ask them. They will be able to tell you. I don't think that would be a problem.

It is up to the board of nursing in your particular state as to their granting you liscensure. Each state has different policies as far as felony/misdemeanors and sitting for boards. Good luck.

Honestly? Here in Canada you cannot be turned away for a misdemeaner. Its the narcotics/sexual / felonies that count. Call your school. Ask them. I do know there was a whole thread on this so I'll try to find it and send it your way.

Relax. :)

Thanks if you find that it would be really helpful I am already in nursing school and half way through my pre-reqs. I just don't want to waste my time.

Well then you're fine! Did you have to get a "vulnerable sectors" police background search prior to entry into school? If not..ask to see if you'll need one to get a job. If you do..then talk to the school and ask why they're taking your money without telling you about this possibility upon graduation.

Sorry about that..I read too fast.

No I didn't have to get one I just applied to the school which is a community college and no half way through my pre-reqs. Once I finish that I will have to apply into the nursing program to start clinicals.

LOL, good thing George W. Bush and Dick Cheney didn't want to be nurses....they're Pres. and Vice-Pres. with former DUIs.

Rather odd that it's okay for a man to run for President with a DUI, but nurses have to run through gauntlets.

Its the students responsibility to ensure they are eligilble to sit for the NCLEX or Eligible for state licensure...IT states that on every nursing application. IT saves the school money, they dont have to do the background checks and so forth. I bet theres a student or two every year that graduate and cannot sit due to convictions.
