how can i get the job?

ok i applied at my local hospital for NA position and a position for aides that move patients for tests etc. i really just want to get into the hospital and start working. im not a CNA but am going to school for nursing my first clinical classes start in september.im not a CNA because there arent many classes where i live and they always interfer with my classes im already taking. i have experience taking care of 2 granparents, one had multiple breathing problems, cancer and was on oxygen and i have helped take care of my grandmother who has slight dementia,alzheimer's, and is on a peg tube i have assisted her with clothing, bathing and toileting. even though im not certified i do suprisingly know whats going on when it comes to typical CNA stuff. i really want this job. they say they will train on the job. is there anyway i can up my chances of getting this job? should i call them to see if they looked at my applicaton its big hospital so im not sure if i should?

If I were you, I would type up a nice, but succinct coverletter and try to gather someone, anyone (teachers, guidanance counselors, former coworkers, etc) to type up a letter on your behalf. Take the CL letter, reference letter and your resume.....and ndeliver it to the manager. If she isn't available, leave it in her mailbox. When she does call you for an interview (and she will), highlight your experience and tell her you were very pleased with what you witnessed when you walked hand delivered the above. If he/she asks you for specifics about what you were pleased about, tell her you are anal about call lights being answered timely and you witnessed call lights being answered very prompltly. And you noticed the rooms looked tidy, etc.

Absolutely agree. While it's certainly a plus for you personally that you have experienced elder/patient care, it will not help with your job application when you're up against candidates that have their CNA.

And don't forget to pay attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling on your resume and cover letter.

I agree with the other posters about getting your CNA and about going up against those who already have it. Have you thought about talking to the nurse recruiter at the hospital? Are you familiar with nurse intern jobs? You have to wait until after your first med surg clinical rotation to apply for these jobs but they are a way for a nursing student to get her foot in the door. It doesn't hurt to call and ask. I know that would delay employment until next spring but at least you will have talked to the recruiter and maybe she could steer you in the right direction for a job until you are eligible for an intern position. :)

May I encourage you to just be you and apply for it. I recently applied for a NA position in the Cardiac Telemetry Unit of our hospital and while they stated they preferred someone with a CNA or at least a couple months of training I applied anyway because of my compassion that I have for people and for some personal experience I had on that floor several years ago. My compassion landed me the job and I start March 14th :) So pray about it and let God provide it :)

I wouldn't hurt to get your BLS, it's a one day course, and you'll need it for nursing school anyway. Also (assuming you are already taking pre-requisites here) stress how your schooling, while it's not a CNA license, makes you a good candidate, such as how A&P helps with medical terminology, etc.

thanks everyone! i applied anyway so i hope i hear from them for at least the chance to meet with them so i can show them that im very willing to learn and that i have a real passion for helping people. I am CPR/AED certified allready so hopefully thatll help me too.
