Can anyone give me some good studying advice on Excelsior???

Published

Hello everyone!! I'm really interested in the Excelsior program LPN to RN. I have a few questions whats the best way to study for the exams that you have to take? Did you buy the books?? I just have to complete 10 nursing classes.. I'm all ears with any good advice anyone has to give.... Thank YOU!!!!!

Specializes in Emergency.

I bought the recommended textbooks from Amazon.com (least expensive for me) and also do take both practice exams for each test. Keep in mind that some of the textbooks include the CD or DVD, and you'll probably want those for the more comprehensive textbooks. The videos not only help set the information in your head, but any skills shown in the videos are probably going to help you through the CPNE down the road. Now specialized books like the Mental Health nursing one... the CD was not worth the trouble for me, but I did read all of the recommended chapters. Everyone's different though.

Definitely follow the Content Guide that Excelsior offers free for download from their site. Your exams will follow that list of study topics.

The practice exams are pricey, but worth it. Kept me focused on the content and type of questioning that Excelsior found important. For example, one practice exam had a strong emphasis on nutrition, and in particular, the nutritional value of certain foods in relation to a specific disorder. I realized that a couple of pages in one of the nursing texts probably should not have been sleepily read at 2 a.m., and so I reviewed that information carefully before the actual examination. That was a big help!

I know a few folks can plow through with notes bought online (SG101, etc.) and so on, but the one question you do have to ask is this: in the end, you may pass the test. But, would you have the knowledge to feel competent in treating a member of your own family, based strictly on notes?

It's a lot more work this way, but worth it in my humble opinion. Takes me about six weeks of studying (average of 2 to 4 hours a day) for each examination.

Hope it helps!

thank you for the info...

Hello,

you should probably start your own thread. you can do that by clicking the big blue button in the main forum page that says "start a topic now". Even better, if you use the search bar at the very top of the same page and type in something like "excelsior microbiology" you might find some good info. here's one recent topic to get you started:
