Nursing Student Position at Camp

Specialties Camp

Published

Does anyone know of a camp that needs a nursing student to help out? I am a junior student from a BSN program. I would prefer a job in a specialty camp that caters to children with a certain disability or chronic illness such as diabetes.

Thanks!

Camp Oakhurst has a program similar to this to my knowledge. They are in NY/NJ and are for special needs physical/developmental disabilities. I had applied for it and decided against it b/c I wasnt sure about how supervised it would be. Also, if you go to the ACA (american camp association) you can find a camp based on population/need. I have worked at special needs camps as a counselor in the past and I think it has made me a better nurse - you see kids for who they are, not as an illness because they are living with it and generally speaking not sick.

Many camps have hired their staff already...good luck! Be prepared for LOTS of interviews - I applied at one camp and had to interveiw with three different people. If you want ideas/tips/ect feel free to PM me.

Also, there are some places that have spring/fall programs that are easy(ier) to get into if that doesnt work for you.

Good luck!

Clara Barton Camp in North Oxford, MA hires student nurses. It is a camp for girls with Type I Diabetes. I worked there for 2 years and I loved every minute!!

I 'played nurse' for 2 summers at a Girl Scout camp (then went back last summer after I got my license, woohoo!). The absolute bare minimum qualifications were the Red Cross 'Responding to Emergencies' class and several hours of Health Officer training (passing meds and proper documentation, with a little about the most common illnesses/injuries). Check the ACA website for camps that interest you, then contact the director or sponsoring agency to find out what their requirements are.

Specializes in OB, GYN, community nursing.

The Global Youth Village in Virginia hires student nurses or new grads, and I think they are still hiring for this summer. No special needs focus, but they work with a lot of teens from around the world, so you get some exposure to some unusual health conditions you may not normally see here in the US... like malaria and other tropic diseases. Thus year they are hosting youth delegations form Indonesia and Iraq. I worked with them for a couple of summers and really enjoyed it! Get to be involved in other activities aside from nursing care, depending on where your interests and talents are.

Specializes in Urgent Care NP, Emergency Nursing, Camp Nursing.

It's probably a bit late for the OP, but my suggestion is to get your First Responder or EMT-B license and work as a health officer - those'll give you some legal standing, while just being a student nurse won't do much for you unless a camp has a specific program/position for you.
