I got here yest. I was promised a Nurse Asst. She told me yest that she has other duties. I am the lone nurse in a one bedroom house, with 200 kids, 50 staff. I have 75 meds for am including staff who come in alot and kids wanting prns. I have one with insulin pump, mom called at 6:30, the aide in far building didnot answer cell. She says she has to do other tie dye shows, is off monday at lunch, is off Tuesday after dinner, does not triage, she isnt a nurse, i am. What? I wrote the director i may not stay, can i leave?

Frustrated and Scared

I am in the lower southern states and part of the compact states licensing. I appreciate the offer but I'm finished for the summer and probably done with camp nursing. I wish they would have been upfront and wish I'd spoken with a previous nurse before accepting the assignment. I think this nightmare did me in for good!

Smh means (shaking my head) in disbelief. I first told the aide who told a leader (asst lower director?) who convinced me to stay for the week. The bigwig hid until storm died, never mentioned but asked how the patients were doing, i played along with it until my last day and then told him how i felt. I felt i couldn't function and tell him off while working there. Maybe the young leader didn't have the ultimate decision in breaking contract but she was part of the hiring crew who interviewed me over the phone. I wasnt sure about how long a replacement would take and the safe harbor rule, so I stayed and toughed it out. That's why I'm done with camping. I will be paid because I stayed my full week but get this, he said thanks for doing a hemilech on that kid in the diner but we are mailing your check out to you. What?

Why would the aide be doing her thing would be my quess that she has other duties per the cheap director, she knows the nurses has their hands full and thus disappears and hides. Also she recently graduated in a different field and has no nursing interest! She boldly tells campers while in my presence that she does NOT want to be a nurse! She prefer other fun things, so I was left there alone with all kinds of excuses. I drove home with a back strain, red eyes with 4 hours of sleep, very exhausted, broke, 4 lbs lighter. So yeah, it wasn't good. I prayed for strengh and the week flew by, thank God.

It was a "Christian Camp" but I didnt feel I was being treated Christ like. I only heard, "we appreciate you for coming" (showing up). If you treat people right, they will come back.

For many years, I was involved in a camp for children with epilepsy. Many of the counselors were former campers who also had epilepsy. It was considered a liability for them to keep their meds in the cabin but we didn't administer them for them. We kept them in the infirmary, brought them with us to meals with the children's meds, but it was up to them to come over and get them.

Same. I store the counselor's meds, but I don't administer them. Counselors can get their own PRNs as well. I work at a special needs camp (adults/kids).

I don't do PRNs for camper during morning and evening med pass. The health aide should be there with you during those "big" med passes(morning/night typically) to help expedite that process.

ETA sorry I didn't read through the whole thread and realized you had quit. You had to do what was best for you, but don't let one bad experience turn you off to camp nursing. Every camp culture is different, and you have to be pretty specific about the questions you ask when you interview, and the duties you and your co-workers will be responsible for.
