Hi:
I'm from California and I have been seeing these ads with nurses talking about how wonderful Schwarznegger has been for nursing. But they do not say how, what, or whatever; just how wonderful he has made it for the nurses and better patient care. I haven't been able to find any infor about this.
Frankly, I don't see what is so wonderful if he is reducing patient rations, getting rid of LPN's, CNA'S letting the nurses do "total patient care." I have been through this total patient care thing in the past and it hasn't worked.
Can anyone enighten me?
Thanks

That tv ad that you have seen is from the California Hospital Association. Those fellas that are in Arnold's back pocket. All they care about is their profit margin and not protecting patients or keeping nurses at the bedside.
Arnold also gets tons of money from the pharmacutical industry

Ha! I saw that commercial for the first time tonight. Very vague indeed. I like the way the R.N. at the end of the commercial 'thanks' the Governor for putting patients first. The way I interpreted this commercial was like this: Governor S. implemented a Nurse/patient ratio, but since it affected the hospitals in a negative manner (they were losing $$$ because it caused an even larger Nursing shortage), he eased off the ratio idea. So, thanking him for putting patients first really means, "Sorry Nurses, your work loads will be just as heavy or worse than before because we really don't care about you. After all, the BIG hospitals have to make money." Just my take on it.

I am VERY disappointed and upset with the governator. We already waited YEARS for AB394 to pass. It was back when I was a new grad that this legislation was being formed. Now we have to WAIT another bunch of years???? Patient safety is obviously not his main priority. The thing that makes me the angriest is that the governator will probably never have a clue about what it is like to be a patient in a poorly staffed hospital. Celebrities always get VIP treatment. It really makes my blood boil.
I wrote him a letter expressing my dispapproval. I hope other Californians will, too. He's not getting my support in any future elections. :angryfire

Any idea if CNA is planning a law suit?

I am so tired of people talking and nothing ever happens to make our workplaces safer...this country deserves the huge deficit of nurses it gets.
I just returned from the rally in Sacramento!!!! 2500 Nurses turned out to let the governator know how we feel :angryfire . State legislators are on our side, at least 5 spoke at the rally. CNA is filing a lawsuit. Arnold needs to respect the legislative process and not throw his weight around for his rich buddies.

I read the book written by Arnold in the 1970's. Arnols is for Arnold first and foremost. Arnold is his own favorite cause. Using this as your Assessment, can you figure out the Diagnosis Arnold has for nurse-patient ratios? The Plan he intends to implement? The Interventions he will perform? Evaluate his stance using this criteria.

I voted for that lousy actor because he was the lessor of other evils, now it appears he is a "special interest" guy right down the line. He has vetoed the progress of the ratio law by suspending the eventual 1:5 for med/surg, which was due to go into effect this January.
Since he came into office, we have seen more facilities, trauma centers and clinics close their doors due to "budget problems" and the ever famous "we can't find enough nurses to staff this place!". Well! Someone who receives his medical care at a privately owned clinic and hospital, The Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills California, where every room is a private suite and the food comes with a wine list from Wolfgang Puck ( I am told!) is probably an EXPERT on the hospital environment and the function of healthcare professionals ( I'm being sarcastic).
As for the nursing shortage, I am an experienced RN with several years of practice in a wide variety of settings and am working registry while hoping for a position to open at Kaiser where I interviewed over 2 months ago. Today I was cancelled for the 9th day in a row. How can I believe there is a shortage when the quarterback is warming the bench?
A final note; thanks so much Ahhhnold for vetoing legislation that would reverse the anti ferrit law which has been in effect since the 1920"s. Since I own 2 of these delightful critters, I remain a criminal. Seems logical eh? But the Department of Agriculture was a HUGE contributor to his campaign and they are the department that regulates these "laws". Without such nuisance regulations, this agency would have nothing better to do than study the sex life of fruit flies. Thanks for letting me vent, I'll be back !

Ugh, this doesn't sound good, I live in NY, where the radical and needed laws origionate in CA, move next to us then trickle down. The fact that he is now stonewalling is disguisting! We MUST continue to unite through our state nurses associations, write letters to them and our representatives and for god sakes... vote people in, or out who don't have their constituants, our patients in mind when the PAC's and special intrest $$$, suddenly change their tune.
It also takes an educated community to get involved... don't show up in a hospital bed complaining, when your voting record, or lack there of, helped put you in the mess that our health care system is in!
