West Coast University - BSN Program

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi Everyone,

I got a 75% on my TEAS V test. I know I needed to get at least 85% on my Teas V score to be competitive on most BSN programs.

I found out that West Coast University is now accepting Teas V scores with a minimum score of 58%. So with a 75% score on the Teas V, I was a qualified applicant and I didn't have to take their HESI exam.

Once you're qualified based on taking their HESI or Teas V, the biggest qualifying factor you have is getting approved for Financial Aid or Private Student Loans. If you have all your finances straight, then that's when they secure your spot in their Nursing Program.

However, my biggest gripe right now and most of the students that I have spoken with is that they have a weird system of transferring credits. Each student I spoke to had different experiences on what classes transferred to that school and what didn't.

For example, WCU transfered all of my science classes that I took at Los Angeles Valley College:

Anatomy

Physiology

Microbiology

Psychology - Intro

Psychology - LifeSpan

BUT, they didn't transfer my General Chemistry.

They transfered my CAL STATE LA:

English 101/102 but they said that both my English 101/102 class that I took only transfers over to their English 140 Written Communication I, but not to their English 140 Written Communication II.

They also didn't transfer the following G.E. classes that I took in CAL STATE LA:

Philosophy

College Mathematics

Public Speaking

Their reason is that CAL STATE LA is a Quarter system and WCU is a Semester system. This is how they calculate it: 1 quarter unit = 0.67 semester unit

In addition, if they don't think your class is equivalent to their class they won't accept it as transfer credit.

My biggest advice is to go to their transfer credit website: 4

I will be starting my lvn in dec program at American Career College ... ACC is the sister school of West Coast ...I called West Coast and if you are going LVN- BSN your program is 34months ...;)

I'm starting WCU in January. At the Disneyland campus. I can't wait

please let us know how your experience is

I called West Coast .. they say that you cannot pick your schedule.. is that true that you cannot pick your schedule ? Can anyone let me/us know a bit more of your school schedule ?

community classes do transfer to westcoast... one of my friend's is doing her first yr there, all of her classes went through, the school though is very expensive.....

Im currently on my third Term at West Coast, I start my Nursing Core Classes in January (I had a few pre-reqs left to do: Statistics, Critical Thinking, Cultural Pluralism, Lifespan Psych, and Pathophysiology). Some of the pre-reqs can be taken online so that helps with scheduling, I am taking Cultural Pluralism online currently this term and Its quite convenient.

but to answer your question: No you do not get to choose your schedule, it is given to you about 3 weeks in advance. There is a way to trade with someone or ask for a different day, but I haven't gone through that yet so I don't know what the procedure is for that. so far I have noticed though my schedule has been pretty consistent through out the past two terms. My classes have been Mondays and Tuesdays 6pm to 11pm, although this semester its only Mondays 6pm to 11pm cause I am only taking one class on campus (the other one is online). But it really also depends on what classes you are taking that term, classes can be any day of the week except Sundays, Ive had classmates who had anatomy with lab on Wenesday's from 9am till 11pm! (with a few hours break inbetween).

One thing I must say: The Terms go by FAST! So you have to be on top of things! each class is 9 weeks (10th week is off), before you know it you are taking the midterm on the 4th week and if you didn't study it can bite you in the butt! But I personally love the pace because there is less time to forget things inbetween tests :).

About transferring classes: They will usually accept classes from Community Colleges as long as it matches in the number of Credits (some times you have to poke and prod them about it). I transferred the following classes: College Algebra, English 1 and 2, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Oral Communication (speech), and Intro to Psychology.

They originally didn't accept my Biochemistry class but I poke and prodded them about it and they eventually did.

I took my transferred classes both at a Community College (Irvine Valley College, Saddleback College) and Online through Brigham Young University Independent Study.

BYU Independent study is a great way to get classes done fast (although its about 500 bucks a class) I got about 2 or 3 classes done in a month and a half. (It took a lot of commitment and dedication but I did it!) and they are transferable to west coast!

Feel free to ask anymore questions!

How good is this school? I was thinking of making it my back up

I guess if you do some of the classes at a community college or do an lvn program ...the price of tuition drops quiet a bit sin your program might take less time to finish .. so most likely the program will not be costing the 120,000 but less so its doable ...It sucks that you cannot pick your schedule but every school has there guidelines to follow that awesome that they have on line classes ...

I’m rushing to get into the APRIL, Ontario Ca, program. L , How hard was it to find housing.

Highly suggested for those who have connections in hospitals who will hire them immediately after graduation. If not, you'll be in a world of debt. Acute hospital specifically.

Source: Best friend graduated from WCU and is employed paying off debt in 6 years $2,100 a month. As for his fellow classmates who can't even find work in a snf, their loan is already up to $170,000 and rising because of interest.

GL, please think about where your finances are 5 years ahead of time before deciding on something like this.

I can't seem to find the actual list of general classes needed to complete your bsn at wcu. Is it posted online? Thanks :)

Hi, I will be attending WCU in Ontario starting June 15th. I just got cleared through financial aid. I don't have any prerequisites to transfer in because the classes that I've taken that might have transferred are 10 years old. I know I could decrease my tuition payments by taking these classes first but I am just tired of waiting. I wish I had pursued nursing 10 years ago when I was first looking into it but I was young and I chickened out. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the cost of tuition and the high monthly student loan payments that I will have after graduation. But at this point I just need to take a leap of faith and trust in myself to be successful.

Hi, it took me a moment digging through the online catalog, but I found the full course list for the BSN.
