New grad, just got a job offer in fresno, needs advice pls

U.S.A. California

Hi, to all! I am a new graduate nurse from San Diego and I just got a job offer in Fresno after my interview 2 days ago...I graduated with my BSN in Dec. I was offered $28/hr...I was wondering if that is the amount to start for a new grad with BSN? Obviously salary for a new grad here in San Diego is much higher, because of the cost of living too... I just want to get an idea. Also, if you do live in Fresno, can you give me advice in which area to live in? I just want to be in a safe neighborhood as I will be moving there and will be living there by myself. Thank you in advance!

I would just be happy to have a job offer. If things are not to your liking, at least you will be gaining experience that you can use to get a better job in time. Congrats on your new position.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

$28 hourly is a competitive pay rate for central CA and the San Joaquin Valley area because the cost of living is lower than in other parts of the state. Regardless of the pay, I would accept this job offer in a heartbeat. Many new grads in California are not receiving offers of employment at the present time.

I've heard that northwest Fresno and northeast Fresno are the more desirable parts of the city. Good luck to you!

Caliotter3: Thanks! I thought about staying there for 2 years or so just to get an experience.

TheCommuter, RN: I will consider moving to northwest or northeast of Fresno..Thanks for the advice!

You should live in Clovis area. Safer and nicer. It gets too hot in Central California.

Congrats on the job offer!!! I just started my first job in Bakersfield, and so far it is going great!!! My salary is $29/ hour so right on track with central California.

Good luck:up:

Congratulations! And I have friends from the Fresno area. Definitely aim for Clovis.

Specializes in Emergency Department.

I used to live in that area. You want to live somewhere in Clovis, or a Fresno neighborhood that borders Clovis. Southeast Fresno, quite likely, still isn't all that safe of a place to live. When I lived there, Law Enforcement wouldn't go off the main streets without substantial backup. While things have likely improved somewhat, I doubt things have radically changed.

Clovis area is good, and the schools are (at least when I was there) pretty good as well. It will get hot in the summer, but it's dry so you won't be sticky hot. From about late October until about Mid-February/early March, tule fog can get really, really bad. On the whole though, I liked the area.

Seems like everyone agrees that Clovis is the best are to live in...This is actually out of topic but I've been getting multiple calls for interviews here in my area after I accepted the job offer in Fresno..now I don't know what to do.:uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3::uhoh3:

Going for an interview can never be a bad thing, the worst that can happen is that you decline a position, but you never know it could be a better opportunity for you and leave the position you already accepted.

Good luck in whichever you chose!

Which hospital will you be working at? I live in clovis and I can vouch for the other posters it is one the safest and best area to live in.

Sounds like a wonderful dilemma to have. So what did you finally do? San Diego is such a beautiful place.
