need advice...50k for an ADN?

good idea to pay 50k for an ADN program that i could start right away?

all other options require waiting at least 2 years. eg, cc have 2-5 yr waitlists, bsn programs require more pre-reqs, etc.

If you have the means to pay for the ADN program, why not go for it? I'm sure it would take some financial aid help, but I bet most of us will be using financial aid as it is no matter what program we choose.

I would think twice about spending that much $$$ in today's economy, esp with so many new grads not being able to find employment. If you do take the plunge, be prepared to move out of state to an area that really has a nursing shortage.

Have you calculated how much your student loan payments will be if you have to borrow the $$$$?

If you have the funds to pay for this, I would consider it. But the two year cutoff point somewhat irks me. I think I could deal with a two year wait for a less expensive (and probable higher quality) education. But, if the waiting lists were three years, then I would go for the expensive program.

I'm in your same boat! I'm going to go to Kaplan College in Vista, CA for one year, the LPN program and pay almost 30k. I'm a military spouse and we move every 2-3 years so I can't be on a waiting list, or apply every year. I'ts a lot of money and I'm going to apply for every grant out there. Luckily I'm a veteran and have the GI bill, but that will only cover half, so I will still have student loans when I'm done. Best of luck to you!!!!!

Don't know if this fits your situation, but if you have a bachelors in another field you can get an accelerated BSN in one year for the same price.

actually, yes that is my situation. i have a bachelors, and i have also considered accelerated BSN.

but here is my local situation...

50k adn: i can start this september, finish spring 2011.

OSU San Diego: i have to complete 1 more of their pre-reqs before applying. the soonest i could take that class is fall 09, meaning the soonest i could apply is dec 09 to start who knows when (summer 2010?).

CSU San Marcos Accelerated: i would have to complete 1 more of their requirements before applying. soonest i could take that class is summer 09, which takes me out of the current application cycle since pre-reqs for the spring 2010 start date need to be completed before the june application deadline. since they only start one class per year, the soonest i could apply is for their next cohort with a spring 2011 start date.

musn't forget there's always the CC system: wait forever

Since you mention you are in SoCal, you might want to look into the program that is just starting up. It is accredited by CCNE. The first cohort starts in July 09, the second in Jan 10. You need to have a degree and be a CNA or LPN. Reasonable in cost: $4250 for every 6 months. There are now five hospital locations throughout SoCal for clinical placements. They advertise on this site, you can click on the ad or go to http://www.wgu.edu, to read about it. If you aren't a CNA already, I would consider getting the certification and going for this program. For about $16,000 you would come away with a BSN.

Are you able to relocate to Northern California?

I have an ADN - from a community college that only cost a couple thousand dollars. I'm in a RN-BSN program at a private univ now and it costs $15,000.

50K seems very very excessive to me.

steph

yeah, 50k is a lot, hence my reluctance to jump right in. but it saves me a lot of time.

i was not aware of , so thanks for that. it looks like an option if i'm willing to move.

i would prefer not to move, but if i can finish elsewhere in the same time frame for under 50k (tuition + housing), then i might go for it. however, if cost incl housing came up about the same, i'd prefer the luxury of staying right where i am.

decisions, decisions...

You might be interested in Samuel Merritt, but it's in northern CA. Most the important info you might need is at www.samuelmerritt.edu or you can PM me. I am graduating from their Accelerated BSN program this year.
