Hello everyone,

Anyone working in Fresno....? I plan to move there from Canada. Looks great! Is it really a wonderful place to live and work? Anyone have input? How do you like it?

My dad (early 70's) and step-mom moved up there about 9 years ago for her job....they seem to enjoy the area a great deal....I am sure that they are considered "north" as many mentioned as their neighborhood, shopping areas, etc., were lovely when I visited last year....my step-brother who's now 26 completed his degree at Fresno State, so apparently it wasn't bad enough to keep them from having him live and commute in the area.

I don't know that there are very many places in CA anymore (or most larger-sized cities) that you won't have bad areas -- day and/or night.

I think it's wise to take in to account everyone's comments and then spend some time in the area to get a feel for it. I also think it'd be prudent to contact some of these folks to get some ideas where to stay when you do that, however, lolol....

BTW, I worry more about having problems in the Bay Area, than I would in Fresno.

Uh, yeah....except for some pretty exclusive areas, I'd have to agree on this viewpoint!! :)

Why does it cost less to live in Fresno?
Undesirable weather.

Ok, I have to get my 2 cents in. Have lived in Fresno all my life. I disagree with the comment that the only safe areas are North of Herndon. Did everyone forget about Old Fig or Van Ness Extension. I happen to live in the 93711 zip and live in a wonderful neighborhood and feel relatively safe.

However, having said that...I am well aware that there are some neighborhoods out there that even the police will not go in at night - at least not without a lot of back-up. I was a hospice nurse for 4 years and have been all over this town (day and night) - and honestly have never ran into a problem, but am aware that Fresno can be quite dangerous.

Now the other issues - weather stinks... terribly hot in the summer and cold and foggy in the winter. :o Air quality is 2nd or 3rd worst in the NATION. We are known as the "asthma capital" due to the large percentage of the population that develop it. Really still a "hick town" with that sort of mentality.

I'll be moving to San Diego the first part of December where crime may be bad in areas, but the weather is primo, the ocean is visible out my front window, the sky is actually blue instead of the gray/brown color of the central valley, and there is so much to do and see. For me it will be so refreshing to get out of Fresno!

Good luck.;)

I am a pre-nursing student at fresno state. I moved up here from north Los Angeles County and i like fresno. I feel that to move away from gangs and drugs you have to live in an extremely small town. I love fresno....i have been to most parts...ya there are some rough areas, but great areas, the weather isn't too bad....i lived in the desert so the heat doesn't bother me. You are close to the moutains and also sierra summit in the winter. there are plenty of shops and the campus is beautiful. They are really developing the areas around the campus with more stores and resturants. The biggest thing that i liked about fresno that the people are extremely friendly compared to LA. I of course would visit before you move here but its great its a big enough city with a friendly atmosphere

I'm trying to get back into Fresno State as a pre-nursing student. I ordinarily get straight A's but just didn't apply myself when I went there 15 years ago. Do you mind if I ask how far along you are in your pre-reqs? If you don't mind, I would like to add you to my favorites and ask occasional questions about professors, classes, etc. Would that be okay? I haven't happened across many fellow bulldogs.

Feel free to ask any questions anytime! I have finished all my prereqs except for Microbiology and Physiology which I'm finishing up right now. I applied for spring 07.

Good luck on your acceptance!! I just had a meeting with Penny Lacy yesterday to discuss my course schedule. I'll be a few years behind you. If you have any hints on professors or courses to take, feel free to email.

Wow, you best read the first two post well. Joker

Just an FYI. Gang members do have cars. No area of Fresno is immune to the gangs. They can just as easily live in South Fresno as North Fresno. I am getting out of here by the end of the year. This is coming from someone who has lived here all my life. Tired of the corruption, the crime, and the people. There are MUCH better places to live than Fresno.
