I completed a Southern California LVN program in the Los Angeles area last October. Numerous facilities and employers visited our school during the week of graduation for recruitment purposes.

Kaiser Hospitals were offering $17 to start. Northeast Valley Health Center offered $15 to start. Olive View Medical Center offered a base salary of $2550 monthly. The LTCFs and home health agencies were offering anywhere from $18 to $21 to start.

Holy Cow! I can't believe how much you guys make as LVNs. As an LPN in Wisconsin with 10 years experience, 5 in burn unit ICU and 5 in LTC I made $14.41 and that was in May of 2006!

As a new grad RN in surgical/trauma ICU at a level II trauma center I make $20.86.

My hat is off to you guys. I am thrilled whenever I hear about hard working nurses making decent money. You (we) deserve it.

Maybe after I get my CCRN I should spend 6 months in Ca to save for grad school?

I just got my lvn license 9 months ago. The place I work at now, pays $20 an hour. I've been offered $21. And my girlfriend with 6 months of snf experience gets paid $23 in orange county.

I just checked the UCLA Medical Center Job listing and the LVN pay scale (the only one I can find that will list pay up front) is as follows:

LVN 6 East Surgery (Med Surg)

$14.75 to start

$19.84 maximum

Sr LVN 6 East Surgery (Med Surg)

15.50 to start

$21.61 maximum

LVN Orthopedic Surgery Center (a clinic I believe)

$16.76 to start

$23.37 maximum

LVN Float Team Part time Per Diem (no medical benefits)

$20.91 to start

$22.66 maximum

A friend of mine works there as an LVN and she told me that she really works hard for her pay. She's on a Med Surg floor. She says that she's teamed up with an RN but the LVNs do most of the work, whereas most but not all of the RNs she works with will just chart and hang IV meds. She also told me that only 3 units (out of 14 units and 4 ICUs I think she said) use LVNs within the hospital, while the rest have Care Partners (CNAs).

I have another friend who works in a SNF and she makes $23.00 and hour but gives meds to 45 patients.

The pay seams high, but as they tell me, they do earn their salary and often times feel it's not enough for all the work they do.

Hoping LVN2BSN

Ps/ Sacto Is Dirty Very Polluted So What You Make Will Not Compensate The Health Of You And Your Family. Best Of Luck!

Coming from someone who sounds like they have never been to Sacramento. Sacramento is no where near as dirty and polluted as you make it sound. As with any city, Sac has it's shotty parts but overall is a beautiful area. I grew up there for 21 years and have been to every nook and cranny and even the worst part of Sacramento and it's surrounding suburbs have never comprimised my health as much as this post has compromised my sensibilities.

i work in oroville, ca. that's about an hour from sac. i have worked the same long term care facility for the past 8 years. i make 23.00 an hour with a shift diff. and we are working on getting a raise. i have a friend who works in yuba city, and he makes 26.00, as a supervisor. i work long hours, 12 hr. shifts. but, if your interested we are hiring and desperate for nurses. you won't make 23 to start. good luck in your search. and remember that the hospital both acute and long term are short everywhere, so you can ask for alot more than they offer

Why is it so low over there? Payscale.com stated that LVN makes an avearge of 48k a year. Is this wrong then?

wow sounds like the company you work for pays low. I recently received my LVN and just started out at 22.00/hr. Its per diem and I work day shift. Its at long term care facility in the eureka/arcata, ca area. The name of the parent company is skilled nursing if anyone is interested. Good way to pay your way through a BSN program. Good stepping stone.

Specializes in My first yr. as a LVN!.

Looks like this may be an old post, but that pay is very low!!!! I dont have experience yet as LVN since grad. is right around the corner but as a CMA I was @ $20/hr plus bonuses which averaged $22 an hour. My clinical site for LVN starts us $25/hr. PLus Im assuming the NOC differential would be max $27/hr. I have seen as low as $20/hr and was shocked!! When I get NCLEX done Im applying to my clinical site and then just going from there to work and then to my bridge to RN... its hard because I was getting paid so well as a CMA, that theres no way Im accepting the same or less after accomplishing 16mths in school as well as a license and my IV cert.

Specializes in M/S, Tel, ER, Onc, Clinic, MH, Corrections, CC.

Whoops! I made an error. I make $34.00/hour. I also get plenty of over time at time and 1/2 and Double time.
