California educational requirements?

Published

I am graduating in May with an ADN from an SACS accredited technical college in Charleston SC (Trident Technical College). I have started the application process to receive my license by examination in California and see that it says I must meet the educational requirements of the state to take my exam. I am having difficulty finding out what exactly those requirements are. I would hate to go through the application process and do everything right and find out that I need to take more classes in order to take my exam and receive my license.

I have talked to an instructor at my school, she was stumped. I have an email in to the Dean of my school and I also have an email into CA's BRN, I am waiting to hear back from both (I emailed the BRN over a week ago about the fingerprint process and have yet to hear back on that topic so I am not sure if they will respond to my email about this issue). Does anyone know how to find out the educational requirements for the state of CA? Any information is greatly appreciated! :)

I would seriously obtain a South Carolina RN license by examination, and then get licensure by endorsement in California. Obtaining your initial license by examination in California can be a lengthy, drawn out process for someone who did not receive their nursing education in the state.

I know that one of the educational requirements for California RNs is 810 clinical hours during the course of the nursing program that you attended.

In addition, do you have a job lined up in CA? I'm asking, because it has been virtually impossible for local new grads to find nursing jobs, and almost improbable for out of state new grads to land something. The ideal situation would be to avoid coming to CA unless you've got 3 to 5 years of hospital experience.

Commuter do you know if that 810 hours of clinical instruction applies to those who took their LVN first? I have my LVN and I'm looking at clinical rotations and for the LVN-RN programs it's nowhere near 810, so I'm thinking that for us LVNs it's 810 between both. Any info is helpful. Thanks

Agree 100% with post recommending licensure by exam in SC then licensure by endorsement in CA. You may spending a few dollars more with this process but suspect you will make it up with the money you save on tylenol..

I agree, I have started my application process here in South Carolina and will obtain my licensure by endorsement. I have enough stress right now with school coming to a close, exit exams, moving, job hunting, etc. This decision is definitely the way to go! Thank you for the advice and information!

This is an update on my CA endorsement application on Breeze:

"Univ of Illinois at Urb. tx in susp 4/29/15 FA Kankakee Com College tx in susp 4/29/15 FA". (2 of my colleges)

I don't understand the lingo!

By the way, I have been unsuccessful in reaching the board by phone. I would really just like to know if there is something else that needs to be done...

Have you find out which educational requirements you need? I also will graduate in South Carolina and plan to apply for CA license.
