Calculating GPA for NS

Published

So, this question isn't as specific to nursing, but I am assuming that anyone who has applied to nursing schools may be able to answer some questions for me (and if you are, thank you in advance). I am graduating from college this May, but I will be appling to an accelerated bsn program/adn/or direct entry msn program this december and I don't know how my cumulative gpa will be calculated, because I took some pre-requiste courses at a community college this summer. I have talked to two different counselors and they gave me two different methods for determining my overall gpa that schools will eventaully ook at.

Here are my Current Stats:

93 credit hours at my univeristy-3.68

11 credit hours at comm. college-4.0

Is every school different, will some only look at one g.p.a from a school, or in general, will schools combine the two?

Thank you again for any help : )

My program calculated a cumulative gpa from all college work combined, and also calculated a gpa from your last 60 hours. Whichever was higher was what they used for ranking. Admission was based solely on gpa. I'm sure every program does things slightly different, so it wouldn't hurt just to ask.

Thank you very much.

Yes, every school is different. The ABSN program I applied to required an Undergrad degree GPA of 3.0 & Science combined cum GPA of 2.75.

If you don't mind me asking, have you started your ABSN program yet? Just curious, as to what to expect.

No. I did attend an Information session last year about the program and we got great info from the Director of Nursing there. She said it will consume a lot of our time. She advised us not to get a job. Classes are held 4 days a week, but just because we don't have class once a week doesn't mean a break. Most students take that time to practice on dummies in the rooms. Basically, your life is the ABSN program for 15 months.

I haven't started yet, but I have been accepted. Our program took 24 students with the lowest gpa accepted being somewhere around 3.6. It's a 12 month program, year round, pretty much 8-5, 5 days per week with clinicals once a week for an 8 hour shift. Until the last two semesters (Summer I and Summer II) - then it's 3 12 hour shifts per week.

Different schools will approach this in different ways.

At UVa, we do not average GPAs. Applicants have a GPA at every school where the studied. When I report matters to the Admissions Committee, the GPAs from schools where you have degrees (BA, MA, PhD, JD, MBA, etc) are at the top of the list. Then I list the GPAs for schools where degrees were not earned.

I also highlight the grades received in the prerequisite classes.
