Bummer, didn't get into new grad nurse residency

Hello all!! Today my post is related to not being accepted into my new grad nurse residency program. I am at a point of ups and downs, so it's more positive than negative. I recently found out that I passed my NCLEX last week so I am now a registered nurse. Prior to taking my nclex, my boss encouraged me to join the new grad nursing program as a way to stay within the organization. Even though I was busy studying, it was a task that I could complete since I already had a resume and a lot of the required documentation to fulfill this. So, I discovered a couple days ago from my boss that 8 other candidates and myself were cut from the new grad program for not making the cut-off requirements. I my cut-off occurred because I was not able to provide an RN license by July 31st. I took my nclex on July 31st, and it took 72 hours for it to post that I obtained my license. According to the nurse recruiters, it would not be fair to others who already had their requirements fulfilled prior to July 31st. Yet, I was able to get an OK from the nurse recruiters that I would fine with a test date on the last day of cut-off as long as I produced an RN license. The gods beyond my boss and nurse recruiters cut me. Sucks, cause I have been an employee in this organization since 2013 as an LVN, and worked full-time and went to school full-time. I even agreed to going out to Palo Alto for 3 months for the residency and to commuting 45 minutes away from home for my future job.

Guess I will have to prepare to conquer the local hospitals, and I was prepared to anyway incase nothing would have came up. There is a lot of redtape and barriers in my organization that prevents me to automatically transitioning to an RN from my current position. Everything from experience to old nursing leadership. I was looking to grow old with my organization, but looks I will blossom elsewhere. My boss is PO'd cause he feels like he failed at helping me and my family. Yet, I feel like I failed him by not being mindful of the cut-off dates. I was too anxious to change my test date. Thanks for allowing me to vent.

That really stinks :(

Does your hospital have cycles for new grad residencies?

My hospital has cycles that start every month. Now that your license has been posted, can you just reapply for the next cycle and begin then?

Either way, all is not lost! Keep up the positive attitude, celebrate passing NCLEX, and keep plugging away. You will get there!

Congratulations!

Great avatar and name!! HAahah! The next cycle will start in January, but its more preparing and then rolling out the next program by April. I might not qualify cause I'll be 6 months past graduation from school and not be considered a new grad anymore. But, maybe my boss could cook something up. My tuition bill is coming up in November, so that is something to light the fire to move on. But thank you for the insight! It does suck though, cause I passed up an ICU nurse residency at a local hospital and put my eggs into my organizations basket lol. I would've ended up in a CLC or nursing home but still within my organization. Yup like you said, stay positive and I'll plugging away. I'm going to fluff up my current resume so that it really stands out know...put my energy into that.

There will be other opportunities. I know you're itching to start now, but depending on your market, you're going to find a lot of these residency programs begin again every few months.

Although I feel for you, you knowingly went in being the exception to the rules, indeed making it unfair for the other candidates who did have their requirements by the due dates, regardless of any strings your manager was trying to pull on your behalf.

Do you have to start through the new grad residency program, or can you just apply for RN positions as they're posted through your internal job postings?

You should be a new grad for a full year. It really sucks that happened to you, but I know that's how new grad programs are. They give a deadline for that NCLEX.

Hahaha, thanks!

Like the PP stated, most residency programs require less than 1 year of RN experience to qualify, so you'll have some time.

Can you call back the organization where you passed up the ICU residency at?

The leadership in my organization will not allow me to obtain an RN position unless I have at least 1-2 years of RN experience. Unless I have attended a new graduate residency program.

I have a friend that was accepted into the same hospital where they had the ICU residency. I'm going to give her a call this week and ask her how everything is going and see if I can apply there for one of their full time positions. The only edge that I have is that I have a BSN, so hopefully its enough. But I will be humble and be patient.

I must say, this is a refreshing change. Usually people are blaming this, that, or the other but don't really seem to grasp that it is their responsibility.

I really hope things work out for you. I don't know if where you live has Urgent Cares, but that's where I got my start and I learned a lot! I believe my old company is expanding out that way...

Good luck with everything!

Do you especially want a new grad residency? (I know, going against the grain here). But just a thought. If there are other places that offer positions for new grads, but not a residency, don't count them out unless you want that specific experience.

So I work for the VA and they have a stellar residency where I would be able to rotate through different specialties. After three months i would have a job not too far from home and it would with the same organization. So I'm used to the union and all the policies. But, I am ready to apply to positions at local hospitals that do not have a nurse residency.
