BSN to MSN or BSN to DNP

Published

Hello. I am a BSN nurse who is currently looking for online programs who are fully accredited to pursue my MSN or DNP in executive leadership. I work full time sometimes 60 hours a week. I am currently looking at WGU or Capella flex path programs. My employer has a contract with Chamberlain but I do not think they have a flex path program.

Any benefits with either online college? Any other recommendations for an online program? I am looking for conveniences, flexible program without a lot of "fluff" work. I haven't been in school for over 20 years so this will be a challenge. Any benefits going from a BSN to DNP or is it better to go for MSN? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

WGU does not have a DNP program.

My opinion is that unless you already have experience in a middle or upper level leadership position, you should go for the MSN. I would not invest in a doctoral level leadership education program until you've already done it and know that's where you see your career going.

Ok. I currently in management. Not sure what a DNP will do for me that a MSN won't do. DNP aside, what online program is best for someone who works 60 plus hours a week with a family?

Unless you want to be a CNO of a large hospital, I don't see that a DNP is worthwhile (except for the intrinsic value you may have on getting the education). You're right, a DNP is not going to do anything for you that that an MSN cannot.
