Hi, all!

Daughter is a soon-to-be BSN (has been an LTC CNA for years) and planning a move to Brooklyn.

What are the per diem nursing opportunities in Brooklyn for a new grad?

She will also be pursuing arts-related professional interests, so won't be looking for full time and needs flexibility. She won't need benefits (can stay on mine for a bit).

Any suggestions/feedback appreciated. Thanks!

It will be extremely difficult for your daughter to land a per-diem job as a new graduate. Per-diem positions are almost always reserved for experienced nurses. There is limited orientation for those positions and they want to be able to successfully place you wherever there is a need, which requires at least 1-2 years of experience working in the acute care setting. You will notice that these postings typically say "Minimum 1-2 years of experience preferred/required." Your daughter would be better off trying to land a part-time or full-time staff nurse position and later one changing her schedule to per-diem once she has gained experience.

Yes, what the person before me said. At my hospital per diem is left for experienced nurses. Why can't your daughter get a full or part time position? Having a BSN and all that experience as a CNA will make her a stronger candidate.

Thanks for the feedback!

Here in northern New England, as well, acute care settings would likely not hire a new grad as a per diem, but long term care absolutely would.

Do you think LTC would possibility for per diem employment in NYC?

LM NY, as I said in the original post, daughter is also pursuing arts-related professional interests--she wants flexibility to work around auditions and rehearsals.

It is possible to find per diem work in Brooklyn, most likely in LTCs. Check the Craigslist, and there you can find agencies hiring new grads for LTC positions. Orientation is 3-5 days, up to 40-50 patients, but your daughter has CNA experience, so it should be doable. PDN is another possibility, because she can be trained quickly for some cases.

Yes it's possible. It might be difficult because the market is extremely competitive and oversaturated, even for LTC. It doesn't hurt to try though.

Look on craigslist jobs in the healthcare section and also on idealist.org . There are jobs posted for clinics, LTC, allergy medical offices, non profits, homecare, etc. These your resume goes straight to the manager without the electronic resume scanning that hospitals have. More likely to get a call back this way.
