Bone cement while pregnant

Published

I was told today that the contraindication of being in the room while bone cement while pregnant is a myth by supervisors. I have looked at a few websites and am getting mixed reviews. The research seems to be limited. Does anyone have any info on this?

Find the instructions for the exact product your OR uses, and present what they say as evidence that supports your stance or that supports theirs. Always have evidence to back your claims. Words directly from the manufacturer of your particular brand is irrefutable evidence.

Does your bone cement contain methyl methacrylate or need to be mixed with this to be used? I think that's the big issue here, not that it's "bone cement" exclusively, but rather the use of this compound with bone cement.

Thank you. I know the Simplex and palacos we use often do. I will have to check the others.

Make sure that your OR is using a scavenger system. If they don't, you have every right to ask not to do those cases. I don't know any data about it, but anything that smells like that can't be good for the baby!

Always look at the MSDS for answers to questions on any chemical in your facility. Employers are required by law to keep them on file and available to any employee.

It's been my experience that you don't have a pregnant female exposed to the bone cement fumes. Been in the O.R. for over 10 years and it's never questioned, they just get a pass to not do total knees or whatever.
