BON for Washington State

Anybody living in WA have knowledge of a good way to reach the BON for WA? I have been trying to reach them to ask questions about Excelsior grads.

Hi there. I thought I might be the ony WA Excelsior student. Nice to meet you. Hehee. What info do you need to know about the WA SBoN for EC grad process? As requested, here is their phone # [phone]. You will need to speak to a woman named Usrah ("yoo-srah"). I have been through a lot and can possibly save you some frustration before you contact them. I'll give you the run down:

WA requires 250 hours (the papers say 200 but the people on the phone say 250) of preceptor experience. That's either 5 or 6 work-weeks (lotta diff if you're not getting paid!)

The state doesn't care specifically if you get paid or not, but they are particular about whom with and where you can do the experience. My place of employment will not allow me to work as an RN during the preceptorship without being an RN and I cannot become an RN without the hours so therefore if I want to stay at my place of emploment to do the time, they wil not pay me. They won't even pay me as an LPN to do the RN preceptor thing even though it's the same job. Whatever!:angryfire

The link above includes a legal contract form beween you and 1) the preceptor and 2) the facility. Seems simple. But, at least with my employer it is not. What it amounts to is I would indeed have to work for 6 weeks doing my same job for free unless I quit and go elsewhere to find someone willing to be my preceptor and a facility without red tape.

Therefore I plan to take a Leave of Absence and sign on with a travel nurse company for one 13 week assignment in a state that does not require the preceptorship and return to WA and endorse my RN license. You can sit for the NCLEX for any state here in WA. In order to endorse another state's RN license you have to actually work in that state as an RN for at leat 250 hours before qualifying for endorsement into WA. That's what I plan to do, except for 13 weeks (the typical minimum travel assignment).

There is a gal at Excelsior who has been so very helpful. She is in the state boards dept and her name is Rosemary. She is great! Unfortunately the info the state tells her is different from what they told me which is also different from what heir papers say above...

That's probably WAY more info than you needed. But that is my summary and solution of the tears and anguish over the last few months. The best solution for me is to AVOID it. Hope that helps. PM me if you want my email, we should chat if you want.

Well it looks like I did give you too much info! Sorry hope it helps someone else. Reviewed some of your previous posts on this site and looks like you are already a grad of EC and are already and RN in Wisconsin. In that case, the state does not care where you went to school (for some reason), and they wil endorse your Wisconsin license as long as you can document 250 worked hours as an RN in WI.

I am still working towards my EC I have NC5-7 left. But I do want to move to WA in the future and figured I will have to get my RN issued by Wisconsin and work some time then move to WA.
