kizzykatlove unlike the US we don't have individual boards of nursing we have one governing body for the whole of the UK. This body regulates nursing practice, maintains a register of practicing nurses and midwives and investigates complaints against individual nurses.
We have different sections to the register, to reflect the type of trainining the nurse has done. So I am a RN (I did the old training) but am classed as an Adult nurse, there is RN (CHild) RN (Mental Health) RN (learning disabilities)
NMC Parts
We are regulated by something called the Code of Professtional conduct and any deviation from that code can result in an investigation and restricitons or loss of your registration.
All training and requirements for practice are exactly the same no matter where you work in the country, so I am a nurse prescriber and I can move all over the UK and use that qualification to prescribe any drugs listed in the national formulary with some small restrictions on opiate medication.

thank you sharrie and silverdragon, i find it interesting how other countries govern the nurses .. i am going to check out those web sites you gave me..
oh i just checked out those web sites i see the different catagories of nurses and i read the code of conduct... i noticed there are different catagories for RN's ectra , if you change your job from peds to maternal do you just change codes by your name?
also here in the USA there is a list of people who had their licensed suspended or revoked on the nursing board website.. do they do that there?
i thought the code of conduct was alot like here... thank you so much for the interesting information ...

If you hold 2 or more qualifications then you hold 2 or more codes. For example I was a Enrolled nurse (similar to PN only training is 2 years) and then did bridge to RN and I am on the register using both.
Yes the NMC will take action against nurses this should give you an idea http://www.nmc-uk.org/aArticle.aspx?ArticleID=193
With the training now if you wanted to change from paediatrics to midwifery you would have to do extra training, and similarly if you wanted to go from being an adult nurse to mental health, you would need to do the extra 18 months mental health training to be able to be on that part of the register.
As far as suspending registration, the NMC hold fitness to practice hearings and these are published on the website
Fitness to practice
Code of conduct hearings
Professional Conduct
In these there is usually a summary of the hearing with the decision of the panel.
You can search the register if you know the name of the nurse or personal identification number, if you look at some of the hearings and take one of the PIN nos and do a search you can see what is under that person's registration record, so it will say this person is under a caution, or this persons registration has been removed.
