Blood exposure possible

Specializes in ICU.

Hello! I am having a little bit of anxiety. I had a patient about a week ago who I was emptying one of her JP's and it had kind of exploded and sprayed blood a little bit. some got on my wrist above my glove and in the side of my glove. I immediately took my gloves off and washed my hands with soap and water. I did not see any blatantly open cuts/sores/wounds/abrasions. it was maybe 3-4 drops of blood and immediately washed and no cut or pokes of any kind just sprayed with a few drops of blood. I was wondering if I should be worried at all about this. I did not see any blatantly not intact skin, but I started doing more research and getting more anxiety about it and would just like some other nurses opinions as I haven't had this happen before. I could not find in the chart anything specific about blood borne diseases if she had any and it was never brought up in report. thank you!

Best advice is that whenever you have a concern like this in the course of your work you should contact your infection control/employee health people right away. They can direct you as needed if there is an exposure or put your mind at ease if something is not considered an exposure.

We can't give advice about your individual situation but I think it is widely accepted that intact skin provides a barrier to BBPs.

Take care ~
