BIO 205?

Hi there. I signed up to take Micro at Rio online just this past Spring semester but I decided to drop it on week 5, even though I had an A in the course. I didn't think it would be that difficult to pass but I realized that I would learn a lot better in person. You may do just fine with Rio if you have done well in other online courses. I wouldn't recommend it if this is your first online course though. Work load was fine but there are a lot of material to learn and if you are a visual learner like me, in-person class may be more helpful. Looking at 'slides' online just didn't do it for me for this one. If you decided to do the online route, PM me. :) The instructor that I was taking 205 from was super nice and I would highly recommend her if you do decide to go that route. Good luck! :)

I think I was in the same class as you Lizzy! I also had to drop it. I am much more of a visual learner too and looking at printouts of slides just wasn't helping me learn..

I think Rio would be fine for any other class besides biology... I have taken english, psychology, and statistics courses from them and absolutely loved it.

Bio 205 was the most difficult of all the nursing prereqs I took, so I would definitely recommend taking it in-class. I have done well in previous online courses, but Micro encompasses a lot of information that required me to ask a lot of questions in class before it sunk in. I had a great Micro professor at Estrella who I would definitely recommend.

I took BIO205 at EMCC as well and can tell you that although it is a tough class there are two VERY good instructors at EMCC (Initials: BS and JL). Kudos to anyone who can take an online Micro course and pass it, learn it and know it for you are certainly better than I...lol.

I took A&P online but could never imagine doing micro online. I highly suggest taking it in person. If you live in the east valley, check out TB (his initials, and no, he doesn't have tuberculosis). He teaches at SMCC, CGCC and MCC.

My vote is for in person. But, it all depends on your learning style. I need to see it and hear someone explain it. Plus, i can't imagine doing the labs at home. It's a tough class and I think it'd be hard online....But that's just me :). Good luck!

I took BIO 205 in person at MCC last semester and got an A. My best friend took it online through Rio Salado. She put in A LOT more time and effort than I did. Her tests were also ridiculously more detailed and difficult. About things that didn't even matter. Like which specific phase of glycolysis is NAD an electron receptor? I just had to know NAD and FAD were electron receptors of glycolysis. Who cares when they are? What is that going to affect? She is a smart girl and was emailing me and asking me questions all semester. I definitely suggest taking it in person.

I'm jumping on the in-person band wagon as well. My micro class at Gateway was the best class of all my pre-recs/co-reqs and I had a fabulous teacher. He really made it make sense to me and the labs were really cool. You can't really learn gram-staining from the internet IMHO. I easily got an A (like a very high A) and feel like I learned a lot and will retain the information well. Feel free to PM or email me if you want to know the teacher's name. :)

I, too, would recommend you take it online. If you live anywhere near Central Phoenix, the BEST teacher ever is at Phoenix Community College!!! She is a phenomenal Micro teacher, makes her class a ton of fun, doesn't bog you down wiht busy work, writes her own outlines that she actually gives to you, and really helps you "get it". ----- at MCC was pretty good for BIO 205. She's kind of a cute dork, so the lectures were entertaining. She gave the study guides out at the beginning of each chapter as well as the lecture slides to write notes on. And she's pretty flexible, let me go to a lecture at a different time when I had a conflict, even let me take the final a different day because I had two cumulative science finals the same day. But you still have to do the work and pay attention to earn your A, but I learned a lot.

I took it online at RIO and was REALLY disappointed in it. It didn't seem necessarily harder than my other classes, but I did put alot of time into it, but the course just wasn't set up well. I found a great deal of things in the lesson that didn't match the textbook, and had difficulty with the instructor, because she didn't actually write the exams so she had trouble sometimes explaining why I got something wrong. Also there were a number of questions I reported to her in the practice exams that were blatantly wrong (hopefully they're fixed now). But I would definitely go the in class route, it was bad enough that I refuse to take any more rio science classes.
