which is better for a new grad?

Published

Hi everyone. I need your inputs on this. Which hospital do you think you'll learn more in as a new grad: A small community hospital or a large well-known hospital? I'm sure everyone will say take whatever you can get. I know experience is precious, but I just don't know which one would benefit me more in the long run. What do you guys look for in a good teaching environment? This will be particularly for medsurg :nurse:

IMO, you are a new grad, and you will learn anywhere. More important questions to ask are, "How long is orientation?" "Will I be with one preceptor, or will I change preceptors based on staffing?" "Do you offer classes in addition to floor work?" "What is the ratio of experienced nurses to nurses with = 2 years experience on any given shift?"

I was wondering that same thing. I will be graduating in May and I already have a job lined up at a small hospital. I'm very excited about this opportunity and am thankful for it. My only concern was if I would be learning and seeing as much as I would if I was at a larger hospital.

You can't just pick based on "big" vs "little" hospital. There's too many other factors to consider: job offer you get, salary, length and quality of orientation, additional educational opportunities, the environment you'll be working in, your career plans, their plans for you...
