Prereqs for a second degree? I live in Queens, and I drove to Suffolk County Community College to take them. The commute is definitely not for everyone, but the professors were first rate, and so were the classes and labs. You might also want to look into SUNY Online, but if you decided to take an online class I highly recommend you check the professor's ratings or better yet contact him/her for a syllabi.

I took my pre-req's for the second degree at LaGuardia in Queens which is easily accessible by the 7 train (about 15 minutes from midtown). Some of the classes were great some not so great but I feel like you are going to get that anywhere. Good luck!

A more important thing to consider is that not all pre-reqs for different schools are the same. What one school will want, the other will not. I would focus first on finding specifics of the exact types of classes that they want, and then the school should be secondary to complete them in.

Again classes are also dependent if there are openings for when you want, and the professors that are teaching them.

Definitely do not look at a school for where it is located alone.

Excellent point Suzanne!

I was lucky that the first school I looked into required classes that was the core of most schools. It wasn't until after my first semester that I wisened up and looked into other schools to apply to. I ended up applying to three accelerated programs with slight variations. TIP: A Chem class with lab is preferable than none.

Also, the main reason I stayed away from CUNY was that I was worried about the classes being full before I can register. Another benefit with SUNY Suffolk was that I didn't have to meet their prereqs, you just have to fill out a waiver. Last summer the ANP I courses in Session I was full so I took ANP II before ANP I with no problems.

I'm taking prereqs at Medgar Evers. The schedule is good especially if you work; they offer lots of night and weekend classes. The level is not very hard, which may or may not be a benefit for you. Personally I wish the classes were a bit more challenging.

Wherever you take your prerequisites, make sure they are transferable to the nursing program you plan on attending. CUNY is the cheapest, but the required courses usually get filled very quickly.

I took prerequisites of A&P I and II, Micro, and Psychology at LaGuardia. I transferred the other credits from my B.A.

It will make your nursing school life a lot easier to get as many prerequisites out of the way.

Other students in my program have taken their prerequisites at Queensborough.

Good luck.

I took my science prerequisite courses at Hudson Co Community College (Jersey City - very close to downtown Manhattan) and Borough of Manhattan Co College (in lower Manhattan). From my experience, the sciences courses at HCCC are much easier than those at BMCC. If you want an easier option, I recommend HCCC. If you really want to learn and feel prepared for nursing school, I highly recommend BMCC. Good luck.

Great Advice Everyone! Thanks!!!;)
