I will graduate in June and have just started working 12-hour clinicals. I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to have my feet amputated--I've been working at a desk job for years and the time on my feet is killing me. Would love to hear what nursing shoes you think are the best. Thanks.

Z-coils are the best shoes I've ever owned. I couldn't make it through a 12-hour shift without them!

This is going to be different for everyone, so I recommend going and trying them on. Some people swear by Dankso's, Crocs, etc.

Personally, I love EasySpriits. I hate NurseMates (made my toes numb, and I dont have a wide foot).

Just make sure to try lots of pairs on and walk around in them :)

Hi there!

Well, this is not an endorsement of this particular website, but it might help you a wee bit: www.allheart.com/

My very, very favorite nursing shoes are/were called "Clinicals" or "Clinics". Now, not sure if they are still made anymore. Kind of looked like the old fashioned clinical shoes that many nursing schools had their students wear. Made of leather, shoelaces. Very fond memories of them. In fact, I wore them for many years until the place that sold them (opposite Macy*s Department Store in NYC) went out of business.

I then went for Clogs, and not the plastic kind. When I was pregnant wore sneakers for those last few months.

Now I traded in sneakers, clogs, clinic's for Army Boots!

Good luck in your search for the perfect duty shoes.

Dansko's all the way!!! They are fantastic. I would recommend buying a second pair because they are great to wear even when you are not at work.

I went to the website allheart.com and bought some NurseMates for wide feet and they feel really good. I'm glad I got them. My feet were killing me after only 4 hours and not anymore. :)

I have a pair of dansko clogs I have had for years and they are still the most comfortable shoes I own!!

I suggest that you:

Go in the evening after you have been up all day. Your feet will be wider.

Choose two pairs and alternate them. Your feet sweat. You want to give your shoes a chance to dry out before you wear them again. I also reccomend changing your socks and giving yourself a short foot massage about half way through your shift. I always feel so much better after my lunch break and I can never tell if it is b/c of the break or the foot rub.

I wash the exterior of my shoes every night with a solution of bleach and water followed by a solution of peroxide and water. Keeps them clean looking most of the time.

Shoelaces VS no laces: it is important to remember that shoes laces also adjust the fit of the shoes to your feet and impact the way they support your feet, Especially your arch. But also remember that laces laced too tightly cut blood supply to your toes. No laces tend not to support your arches as much.

I had a podiatrist reccomend NewBalance, Sketchers, Danskos, and several others. He also reccomended using Doc Schol's products to help improve the cushioning in the shoes too.

I was told this in the Army:

Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you.

I typically spend about $60 to $80 on ea pair of shoes and they last about six months.

Last month I took my mom with me to buy shoes. She asked me why I was buying shoes that my shoes looked brand new(except for the laces... how do you get the bile stains out from where your patient threw up on your shoes?). I flipped them over and showed her how the heel was squished down and the tread a little bare and she understood.

I, as well as almost everyone I work with (even the doc's) wear New Balacne Tennis shoes. they are fabulous.

Klogs--with a K. http://www.klogs.com They are awesome. They run a bit big so order down a size. They also come in narrow and wide as well. I have a pair of bright pink ones and wash them down with wipes at the end of a shift. I have found tennis shoes just don't provide enough support for me.

My Nike Shox are great! They're the only things that keep me going afte r12 hours on the unit. The only downside is that now all other shoes are going to seem inferior.

Do your Dansko's squeak as you walk? Mine do and I'm not quite sure what I can do about it.
