If you could work at any hospital in the Phoenix metro area which one would it be? Which hospitals have the best reputation amoung nurses? Any that I should stay away from? I would appreciate any comments.

I would personally stay away from the maryvale hospitals. I have heard that the carl t hayden va hospital is good, and I am going to be working at Good Sam, and I also looked at Thunderbird. There is also Mayo Clinic associated with the large one in the mideast.

I'm not an RN yet (still in NS) but I know several people who are. I have a friend who works at Chandler Regional and she said the benefits are great. If she comes in on her dayoff she gets double time and an additional $500. I have another friend who works at Mayo and loves it. He's a scrub tech and plans on staying there when he graduates from NS. I also have a couple of friends who work at Scottsdale Shea and they all love it there. We're really fortunate that there's so many hospitals to choose from in the Phx area, good luck with your choice.

Why do you say that?
I did some clinicals there and actually liked the place! Found the nurses in the ER and OB professional and friendly.
Just got done doing clinical in telemetry and med/surg at St. Lukes. The nurses were nice enough, but the place was dirty. I know hospitals are all dirty with germs, but this place was just UNCLEAN. Dirty linens filled up to the top w/o getting picked up. Trash cans heaping, sharps containers so full you could hardly fit a used syringe in them or you'd see some with syringes filled up and over the top. A pt's room so dirty there was food in the bed (food from a previous day!) and a bedridden pt on an air mattress with no sheet on it, yet she'd soiled herself and the mattress was all bloody. This is the type of mattress they are supposed to reuse for another pt!!! Another pt hemorraging on a mattress with no chux pad, sheet or waterproof liner. Another student and I found this and cleaned it up.
I would never work at that hospital under those conditions where there was little support staff or housecleaning. Also no notification of antibiotic-resistant infected pts, you'd find out later after it was too late.

Hey Phoenixgirl,
Was that clinical at Tempe St Lukes? We're getting ready to go to clinicals and right now it looks like my clinical choices are Tempe St Lukes and Mesa Med Ctr...We're supposed to have a rotation at Banner Desert but we're down a clinical instructor......

Mary:
Don't know about Tempe St. Lukes but when I was doing a clinical rotation at Scottsdale Shea for my CNA, we had a pt. sent to us from Mesa Community that was really bad and the ED doc obviously took the easy way out, sending an extremely critical ped to us, with no PICU at Scottsdale Shea. I have not heard good things about Mesa Community, I think they have a lot of pts. with little to no insurance and their care reflects the lack of $$.

I am new to this site and was just looking through when I saw your question. I am currently a travel nurse working in the Phoenix area. I have asked a lot of questions about good and bad hospitals since my contract is almost up. Stay away from Banner Desert ER and Maryvale. I have heard good things about Banner Good Sam and both Scottsdale Osborn and Shea. Mayo also has a great rep. Hope this helps.
Nope, was not the st. lukes in tempe.
Pls don't get discouraged though. The nurses at the st. lukes downtown were nice enough. And that is enough to make a nursing student happy. There are enough hospitals and nurses who are not receptive to students. St. Lukes was very receptive. Just dirty. Not sure if that matters.

I would work for (one of the) Scottsdale out of all the hospitals.
