Hello, all!

I am a new nurse, and I was offered a job at my local Hospice. I'll be working the inpatient unit on night shift, and they've offered a generous amount of time to train me.

But, I'd like to know if anyone has any resources they think would be helpful to me to study while I'm training and beyond: handbooks, manuals, textbooks, organizations, periodicals, etc. I want to hit the ground running and prepare myself as best as possible.

Thank you for your reply, pmabraham! I have read all of Barbara Karnes' booklets and love them. Thank you for the resources, I will look into membership with the HPNA, and joining the facebook group.

When studying for my CHPN exam I used the HPNA Core Curriculum book (ISBN-13: 978-1-4652-7728-2). I felt this book filled so many knowledge gaps related to hospice for me and still feel all hospice nurses should have this book as a hospice primer.

Hi, I'm a little late here but thought I'd chime in. Changing the Way we Die: Compassionate end-of-life care and the hospice movement by Fran Smith and Sheila Himmel.

I like it because it talks not only about bedside care but the history of hospice and hospice companies as a business.
