I’m currently working PRN at a skilled nursing facility during NOC shift. The ratio isn’t bad (1:16) and I’m working in the short-term unit. I would love to work in pediatrics med-surg, adult med-surg, or urgent care. I enjoyed pediatrics during my clinical rotation and am wondering if working as a school nurse would look good when applying for pediatric positions? I would continue working PRN at the SNF with geriatric patients. I’ve been working since August 2019, so I’m brand new still and I’m in school obtaining my Bachelor’s degree.

The fact that you are a new grad could be used to your advantage and you could start working on the unit you really want to without having to build up the experience first.

Is it possible to get a school nurse position as a new grad? And if it is, is it wise? School nurses are working with slim resources- their back up in an emergency is EMS. They need to have solid assessment skills as well, which typically a new grad has yet to develop.
