A good friend who is a PICU nurse referred me to the allnurses community - she says the folks here are incredibly supportive and friendly! I've just registered for my first prerequisite class - Genetics - and will hopefully take A&P I and II later in the summer.
I guess I'm just hoping to make some friends and connections, specifically with those who, like me, are male students, single parents, and/or older second career students. It would be great to talk about what to expect in an accelerated program, the benefits/drawbacks of various specialties (peds, family practice, etc), and what the DNP degree is and why it's better than the standard Master's degree.
Anyway, great to be here and getting started in this new career! Oh, and if anyone enjoys blog reading I've been documenting my journey to nursing school (and beyond!) on toperfectlaughter.wordpress.com.
Have a great day!

Welcome!
Just be aware that one thing with AN is that anonymity is highly regarded. I would change your photo and maybe remove your city. There are many people on here who are any or all of the things you mentioned, and there are a ton of threads addressing many of those topics. You can always post questions as needed as well. :)

Hi! I have to say you are the first person who has mentioned needing genetics for a prereq. I took genetics during my prereqs just because I thought it was interesting, and it was a required class for a second degree I hope to finish after nursing school. Genetics was the class that made stats make sense...I did great in stats, but I failed to see how it all "worked" until we did population genetics in our genetics class, then it was like "Ohhhh, NOW that makes sense!" Hopefully you have some biology background to make your class a bit easier. By the time I took genetics I already had a couple of basic bio classes, both A&Ps, stats, and a couple of chem classes...all which helped with genetics (if I remember correctly, our school requires stats and either micro or a basic bio class as a prereq for genetics) But I find genetics fascinating and loved the class!
Good luck to you! I wish you well on this crazy but awesome journey
