Bad news on NC 6

Published

Ok, so I haven't been around the past few days because I decided to get a D on NC 6 last Friday! I believe a few factors played into me doing poorly - #1 Killer headache #2 My husband sustained an injury the weekend before that put me on an emotional roller coaster ride for a few days. I did ok on the practice exams and felt very confident about the material. In fact, I felt so good taking the exam, I decided not to double check my questions.

When the D popped up, I was blown away! I bombed musculoskeletal with a 37% which is what caused me to fail. It makes no sense to me! I truly felt I was doing great on the entire exam (despite my headache). It's been a terrible blow to my self esteem since I haven't failed a test since high school. I think I bit off more than I could chew - scheduling a lot of exams pretty closer together! Since I return to work in two weeks, I'm going to focus on NC 5 (but probably plan on 3-4 weeks to study for it as opposed to two!).

I was wondering what NCLEX books people utilize with Excelsior's program? Are any of them better than the other?

I got a D on one EC exam as well, and it practically killed me. I recommend taking the practice exam from EC ($60) and read through the Q&A descriptions on it over and over so you memorize everything since you've already got a base knowledge on the subject. I passed my retest with an A.

I've been using Saunder's NCLEX as a study supplement for EC and most of the new RN's I know swear by this book & CD for their boards.

I just used the texts. I stuck post-its at the beginning of every chapter in each text that I needed for each exam.

I'm sorry you failed. But get back on that horse!

Sorry to hear that Erin, just dust yourself off and keep on knocking these exams out. Don't let one exam mess with your confidence. :D

Sorry You failed. I know exactly how you feel. I too failed 2 exams. HD2(Aka NC5) and Transitions to professional nursing. I was stunned but I pushed on and kept it moving. I am now waiting on a date for the CPNE. I applied June 4th and it took a little over 6 months to complete all my tests. You can do it. Time will pass and you will be CPNE ready.

I must agree with everyone else, take a few breathes and get back into it. Slow down if you have to, you CAN do this, I have confidence in you!

:crying2:so sorry you didn't pass

Erin, I must say from experience, It's OK. I too just failed that exam(july), and I felt soooo bad, but my wonderful family here gave me exactly what I needed; a good spat, and a; get back on that horse and ride on to the next exam. Which is great. I'm also studying for the retake of HD2(NC5), and believe me, this time around will be better. Study the practice exams, and study the areas of your weakness. You will do fine the next time. Besides, I can sure use another family member to practice careplans with while waiting in that long line for CPNE :). So let's go sis, I'm waiting for ya!

Sorry to hear about your set back, I agree with taking the practice exams from EC. If you do take the practice exam look at the rationals for the incorrect answers as well, I have seen them in the form of a question on many of the exams. Also, the practice exams are harder than the real one. If you make 70's on them you are doing real good.

Lots of luck to you. TraciLVN/GN

Thanks for the support! I am still dumbfounded as to how it happened. I wish I could see the test to see where I went wrong and to double check the system.. I know it sounds stupid, but I have never felt so good before taking a test! I did do the practice exams and got 68/70. And the ones I got wrong on the practice exams, were ones I changed right to wrong. (hence not double checking my REAL test) Sooooooo, I started on NC 5 because I figured that's the hardest one and I want to get the bulk of that studying done before I go back to work in 1 week. I'm assuming that reviewing for NC 6 (which is my strong areas!), will be easier to review with a full time job.
