Background check for LVN in CA

Published

Hi everyone, been browsing around this forum a lot lately. I got really into nursing and would love to start off as a LVN in the state of California. The only problem is that I have a misdemeanor on my record from a few years ago. I read all the topics on other people in this forum that have misdemeanors and did a lot of research. Seems like a lot of people were still able to get licensed even with a record.

I have not attended LVN school yet, but I'm looking to do so in a few months. Before I dump 30k into becoming a LVN and going through the education, how can I ensure that my misdemeanor won't affect me from getting my licenses? Is there a background check that I can go through with the board of nursing to ensure that I won't be denied?

A background check was required before I began nursing school (the school needs this to arrange clinicals for you with hospitals), and also before I became licensed. If the school does a background check and authorizes you to begin the program, it would be reasonable to think you'd be eligible for licensing. With that being said you could also start with a call to your state board of nursing and just straight up ask them about it (this is the route I would go).

30k to become an LVN?? I would look at other schools than those for profit schools. It's a scam.

Im also going to say it really is going to depend on what your misdemeanor was for as to whether or not it's going to be an issue for licensing. Alcohol and drugs are the big no-nos. California is a difficult state from what I have read. Have all your ducks like court paperwork in a row before applying.

Hmm, all the programs I looked into around the Bay Area in California cost at least 20k. I've been looking into Unitek and another one. The community colleges are full and I just want to get my licenses as quick as possible..
