So as a nurse in L&D I quite often get patients and their family members who ask about the weirdest names I’ve ever heard/seen for babies.. is discussing this with them a HIPAA violation? Obviously no other information other than first name of baby is shared, but I’m just curious where this falls when it comes to HIPAA.

I recently had this kind of discussion with a patients family and said the first name that came to my head (which honestly was pretty tame and not the craziest I’ve ever heard), but apparently they know a child with that name. Would that be considered an issue?

It is best to not go there. It seems to me it's the same as telling a patient the name of other patients you took care of.

I doubt if anything will come of it.
