Average daily mileage

Published

Just wondering what hospice nurses in rural areas normally drive in a day. We cover a large 5 county area and it is not uncommon to drive 200 miles a day. More if on call.

I have heard about 100 miles and more a day for rural areas although I think that 200 miles is a lot - I hope you get paid for all the travel time and reimbursed for mileage in a way that reflects the usage of your car - or you have a company car.

I usually had around 30 - 50 miles a day in hospice in a mixed area - closer to 50 with on call.

This really varies depending on your location. When I worked in the city, I averaged 30 miles, but sometimes that could take hours! In the large rural hospice where I work now, the average is probably 80 miles tho some girls average 120+. Anything else and you really can't get your job done without a reduction in patient load.

I work in a rural area and seem to average around 80 miles per day. A buddy of mine has a couple of patients in the far reaches of the county and easily doubles my average two days a week. If you throw in on-call mileage to the "outer rim" of course we could be well over 200 miles in a day.
