Australian nursing opinions. Wanting to migrate to AU someday.

Published

Hello everybody! First let me say thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a nursing student in the USA with the dream of migrating to AU in about 5 years. My husband and I absolutely love your country. My husband was in Adelaide, South Australia for a couple of months with his job and fell in love with all that your wonderful country has to offer. I have a few questions for all of you nurses. Here, in the United States people commonly say "nurses eat their young" referring to how bad the new nurses are sometimes treated. How is the nursing environment in AU? Do the nurses constantly fight with each other like they do over here in the US? What is the nursing environment like where you work? Are the nurses respected, or are they often treated badly by the doctors? Are you happy with the nursing profession in AU?

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

Bullying within the profession sadly seems worldwide. However having said that we do have a strong union activism against it and we do have policies set out especially in goverment hospitals that are SUPPOSED to discourage this - are they successful - unfortunately no.

However you do at least have a fighting chance and it definitely improving.

Gwenith hit the nail on the head but like anything it's how you go about it. Besides, Aussies get on well with Yanks cos you are SO polite!! Thank you Maam!

I grew up in South Australia but it's too cold. Closer to the equator is the way to go!

Good Luck!

Jill, the fact your husband "fell in love" with Australia is largely due to the fact he was working in ADELAIDE! Don't take any notice of "Farkinott"! He's a traitor coz he left and went north! LOL :rotfl:

ADELAIDE is THE best palce to live in Australia. It's blessed with BEAUTIFUL Mediterrainean, (?spelling!), weather, yes, the winter's can get cold, but that's what winter is SUPPOSED to be! Our Autumn is magnificent, the hills are SO picturesque. The summers are warm to hot to VERY hot! The cost of living here is cheaper than the other cities, and the city itself is just SO pretty and easy to negotiate.

We have excellent health care facilities, they are among the best in the world.

I think you will find that most places are not without staff who are less than desirable, but you will also find helpful, warm and welcoming people too. it's always a challenge being the "new girl", no matter where you work or where you come from. I think though, for the most part, you will find Aussies warm and welcoming. And... there must be *something* special about us Aussies and our magnificent country because, increasingly more Americans are looking to, and trying to, move here to live!

Good luck with your applications!

Cheers,

Grace

Thank you so much for the information on Adelaide. I have seen picture and you are right, it is amazing! I cannot wait to see it for myself.

Thanks again!

Hello Jill

Can I interest you in Brisbane, Queensland? Weather in Bne is warm-hot during summer and cool enough during winter. Fishing all year round. Not too overcrowded........... Hop, skip & a jump to most beaches, surfs, nice holiday locations.

Politics are everywhere you work. It's how you deal with it that matters.

What else do you need to know ..................... nursing registration stuff, immigration stuff. My knowledge is your knowledge..........

Hi Jill

if it's not too late (I see that I somehow missed this thread in August!) may I interest you in Melbourne? It's close enough to Adelaide that your husband can visit if he likes, but we have weather (real seasons, admittedly sometimes all in less than twenty-four hours), a cosmopolitan environment, the most ethnically diverse population, Australia's only nurse: patient ratios, and a great vibe. We really are the world's most livable city!

Oh most definetly Melbourne = world's most livable city (on the social aspect of life) and nurse pt ratios (on the professional front)

Melbourne, Melbourne....

Rachel - like the way you think! (No, how could I be biased?!)

Thank you all for all of your posts. I just cannot wait to get to your country someday! Everywhere sounds so wonderful. How will we ever choose?

I agree the people from Australia are very friendly. I work with many people from different countries every summer at camp. I have made friends with many, two of my friends from Australia just visited me in FL. hopefully I will get to visit them, one is from Adelaide and the other Melbourne.
