Hi,
I am an Australian citizen working as a qualified RN (4yrs) in Australia. I am interested in working in NYC as a RN in early 2012. Can anybody explain the steps i need to take to acheive this? I have not started any of this process yet and want direct simple advice.
I understand it is a long process and that i am required to convert my registration and sit the NCLEX. Is this exam hard?
Any help is useful to me. Thanks for your time.

I am from Sydney and have been working in the US for 7 years now.
Initially I came out with a recruitment company but with the economic downturn this may no longer be available to you. With recruitment companies you will be asked to committ to a contract and that contract can be as long as 2 years or as few as a year, depending on your specialties. Also be aware that the cost of living is substantially different from Australia (or at least that was my experience). What you may think is a great wage, may not be that great here. I would try to research cost of accomodation, where you want to live etc.
My experience here has been great, so I would thoroughly recommend the experience. However, be prepared for a lot of upheaval, as the immigrant experience is disorienting to say the least. Even if you have been here a few times, as I had, living in the country is way different from visiting.
Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to answer them the best I can.

Starting point would be getting registered with the NY BON and also CVS with CGFNS. Be aware you may be short in some hours as we have seen some Australian nurses post like the UK nurses are being short in some areas like Obstetrics or Paeds.
What visa are you looking at in regards to working in the US?
Thank you everybody for your posts. All very helpful.
The visa I am applying for is called the E3 which is a special visa for Australians and is suppose to be alot easier and cheaper for the employer to do the sponcorship process.
Check out posts by ghillbert as they have E3 and will be able to guide you however you need to meet state requirements first and pass NCLEX
