Hi there,
My name is Sarah and I am a second degree nursing student. I'm putting together a project for a core concepts nursing class on the realities of the first year of working as a nurse after school. I know that as a nursing student, I have so many worries about that first year on the job and I was wondering what other folks think? If you have the time to share, I would be so grateful for your time and insight!

My biggest problem was me.
I convinced myself that I had chosen the wrong profession, that I was a total stupid idiot loser, a fumbling clumsy klutz, that couldn't possibly ever get organized, get things done, and I didn't know anything and patients would die if I took care of them. I convinced myself that everyone else was a good nurse and "getting it" but not me.
The gift I give back to new grads is to constantly reassure them that they are smart enough, good enough, and what they are going through is "normal".

Tweety, thank you for your post. I feel that way -- totally idiotic and like I don't know a darn thing. I feel so clumsy and inept, wondering if I am making the right decision to go into nursing.
Tweety, thank you so much for your thoughtful insight. That was so kind of you to share your thoughts and feelings!!!
